Maier and Roe Win Individual Titles As OSU Indoor Track Wraps Up Big 12 Championships
February 26, 2022 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
AMES, IOWA – Led by distance runners Taylor Roe and Alex Maier, the Oklahoma State men's and women's track & field teams capped off another successful run at the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
The women's team scored a program-record 123 points and ultimately finished third overall. The Cowgirls scored points in 11 separate events and won three Big 12 Championships on the weekend. The Cowboys finished the meet with 63 points scored across nine events.
"I thought this whole weekend was awesome," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith said. "The women competed extremely hard. We had people running lifetime bests and doing things they've never done before and just running extremely well. Jumping and throwing as well, it was just a fantastic effort so I'm really excited for the women."
Taylor Roe took the crown in the women's mile, finishing with a time of 4:33.56, which is currently seventh in the country. Behind Roe, Kelsey Ramirez and Colleen Stegmann placed fifth and sixth with times of 4:42.46 and 4:46.69, respectively, to score a combined 17 points for the team in the event.
Taylor Roe took center stage once again in the women's 3,000 Meters, taking the title with a late kick to defeat the former Big 12 Champion Cailie Logue, winning her third Big 12 Championship of the weekend in the process. Gabby Hentemann, Heidi Demeo and Kelsey Ramirez followed closely behind the duo and finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively to earn a total of 25 points overall.
"I knew as soon as I made the pass (for the lead) that she (Logue) was coming," Roe said. "I just had to keep pressing and the crowd was so supportive and it was so cool because everyone was like "Go, go, go!" and I mean how can you not go when you have that many people cheering for you, so it was definitely exciting."
The 25 points scored by the women's 3,000 Meter crew was the highest single-event score by any team in the Big 12 on either the men's or women's side.
Alex Maier continued his torrid stretch by taking control and winning the men's 3,000 Meter run with a last-lap pass to defeat defending champion Wesley Kiptoo with a meet record time of 7:48.73. Maier led most of the way but was passed on the back stretch of the final lap before retaking the lead right in front of the OSU corner in the final straight.
"He passed me up at the end and he's a fantastic runner, so I just tried to hang onto him and wait until the last 50 or 100 meters and just give myself a chance and it just broke my way at the end," Maier said. "I heard the OSU bench and everybody just screaming their heads off and I think that made all the difference… Just that shot of adrenaline and support really helped me finish strong."
Isai Rodriguez also scored three vital points for the Cowboys in the 3,000, finishing sixth overall with his time of 7:58.57. The 13 points put up by Maier and Rodriguez was the highest event score for the Cowboys on the weekend.
Gabija Galvydyte took the race out early and crossed the finish line second in the women's 800m with a personal-best time of 2:03.89, just two one-hundredths of a second short of winning her first conference title. Mackenzie Michael also scored for the Cowgirls, finishing eighth and picking up her first career All-Big 12 honor.
Galvydyte also competed in the women's 4x400 Meter Relay alongside Tamara Woodley, Nickie Dixon and Christina Ollison. This group broke the school record set earlier this season in the relay, finishing with a time of 3:36.22 to round out the scoring for the Cowgirls with six more points on the board.
The Cowgirls picked up an additional eight points in the women's 1,000 Meters, courtesy of a third-place finish from Sivan Auerbach and a seventh-place finish from true freshman Krystal Rodriguez. Auerbach picked up her second career All-Big 12 honor while Rodriguez earned her first in her first season of competition for OSU.
The second-highest scoring event of the weekend for the Cowboys came from the Mile run. Three Cowboys placed in the top eight, with Fouad Messaoudi, Kian Davis and Will Muirhead placing third, fourth and eighth, respectively.
Juan Diego-Castro added to his already impressive Big 12 accolades by finishing third overall in the men's 1,000 Meter run. Diego-Castro picked up his fourth career All-Big 12 honor in the process and helped the Cowboys score seven points overall in the event with help from Chris Middleton-Pearson, who picked up his first career All-Big 12 award with an eighth-place finish.
Tamara Woodley and Tori Ortiz each ran in the second heat of the women's 600 Yards and finished fifth and seventh overall after both set new personal records in the event.
In the men's 600y, EJ Berry and DJ McArthur scored seven total points from the first heat after setting a couple of new personal records.
Bailey Golden scored one point for OSU as she finished eighth in the women's high jump with a jump of 1.70m. She scored for the second time in the weekend after her seventh-place finish in the Pentathlon and received her third career indoor All-Big 12 honor.
The indoor track team will next compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships on March 11 and 12 in Birmingham, Ala.
"We have several first-time qualifiers to the indoor national championships so that's exciting," Smith said. "It's definitely a good sign for where we're going in the future."
