OSU Indoor Track Travels to Birmingham for National Championships
March 10, 2022 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Oklahoma State men's and women's indoor track & field travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships on Friday and Saturday.
Alex Maier, Ariadni Adamopoulou, Gabija Galvydyte, Maddie Meiner and Taylor Roe all qualified individually with Fouad Messaoudi, DJ McArthur, Juan Diego Castro, Ryan Schoppe, Isaiah Priddey and Justin Smith qualifying for the men's DMR squad.
"It's a pretty good-sized group we brought," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith said. "I really believe that every one of them has a chance to score which is exciting. If the women can get into the 12 or 13-point range, I think we can into the top 20 overall, which would be pretty cool."
Meiner will open the weekend first for the Cowgirls, competing Friday in the women's Pentathlon starting at 10:20 a.m. CT with the 60 Meter Hurdles and finishing with the 800 Meter run at 3:40 CT. She currently holds the school record in the event with 4,115 points and is the first OSU multi-event athlete to ever qualify for the national championships.
"If she keeps on the trajectory she's going and has another lifetime best, it's definitely possible for her to score," Smith said. "When you get to this meet, a lot of people are tired, a lot of them don't handle the pressure well… Knowing Maddie, I think she will handle it well because she does well in big moments and I think she's going to have a great day."
Following Meiner is Alex Maier in the men's 5,000 Meter run at 5:05 CT. Maier also holds the school record in the 5K, breaking the previous mark by 13 seconds with his time of 13:25.79. The cross country All-American is competing at indoor nationals for the first time and is looking for his first indoor All-American finish.
Immediately following Maier is the men's DMR final, where the Cowboys are seeking a national-championship run after shattering the school record in the event and becoming the fifth-fastest team in NCAA history according to the USTFCCCA with their time of 9:22.70.
"I'm really excited for the DMR, I think we've got a really good team," Smith said. "We went all-in on the DMR, so I'm excited to see them run."
Adamopoulou finishes off the scoring events Friday in the women's Pole Vault, starting at 6:45 p.m. CT. Keeping with the school record trend, Adamopoulou tied her own school record at the Big 12 Championships with a vault of 4.37 Meters to solidify her spot at nationals. The 2021 First-Team Indoor All-American placed fifth in the event last season and is looking for her second consecutive All-America honor.
Galvydyte rounds out the night Friday officially with her 800 Meter semifinal at 7:45 p.m. CT. She will compete in the second of two heats, with the top three finishers in each heat plus the next two best times qualifying for the final on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. CT.
Cowgirl star Taylor Roe will finish off the competition for OSU in the women's 3,000 Meter run on Saturday at 8 p.m. CT. Roe, a returning 2021 Indoor All-American, is coming off a dominating run at the Big 12 Championships where she won conference titles in every event she was entered in (DMR, Mile and 3K). She currently holds the school record in the 3,000 Meters with her qualifying time of 8:58.58.
"The national meet is so much different than everything else," Smith said. "You have a lot fewer athletes that are truly the elite. Watching them chase their own personal dreams is more what this is about and that's fun and exciting and each event is like a meet within itself."
ESPN3 will stream the championships live starting at 11 a.m. Eastern time Friday, March 11 and starting at 11:30 a.m. Eastern time Saturday, March 12. A re-air of the championship will take place starting at 9:30 p.m. Eastern time Sunday, March 13 on ESPNU.
