Pairings Announced for Big 12 Wrestling Championships

IRVING, Texas – The Big 12 Conference released the 10 brackets for the upcoming Big 12 Wrestling Championships on Wednesday. In total, seven of the 10 Cowboy wrestlers received first round matchups at the tournament.
No. 1 seeds Daton Fix (133), Kaden Gfeller (149) and Dustin Plott (174) will each face an unseeded opponent to begin the tournament. Fix will face Dyson Kunz of Northern Colorado, while Gfeller will take on South Dakota State's Daniel Kimball and Plott will wrestle West Virginia's Dennis Robin.
125-pounder Trevor Mastrogiovanni will square off with Lucas Rodriguez (North Dakota State) in the first round, while the only unseeded Cowboy entering the tournament, Gavin Stika, will begin his weekend against No. 3 Jake Woodley of Oklahoma, who defeated Stika their last time on the mat in Bedlam.
Two Cowboys making their first appearances at the conference tournament will face unseeded wrestlers in the opening round. At 141 pounds, Carter Young will take on Utah Valley's Ty Smith, who lost a 3-0 decision to Dusty Hone in the teams' dual on Dec. 20. Heavyweight Luke Surber will look to make up for an earlier loss against Tyrell Gordon (UNI) in his opening bout before a potential bout against second seed, Zach Elam of Missouri.
Wyatt Sheets (157), Travis Wittlake (165) and Dakota Geer (184) each received byes in the first round of their respective brackets. Sheets will wait for the winner of Northern Colorado's Nathan Moore and OU's Justin Thomas, who Sheets has a 3-3 record against in his career. At 165 pounds, Wittlake will square off with the winner between fifth seed Luke Weber (NDSU) and Nick Knutson (UNC), while Dakota Geer will either face Anthony Carman (WVU) or Cade King (SDSU) in the 184-pound bracket.
