STILLWATER - With the 2018-19 season starting up next week the Oklahoma State women's golf team will feature a revamped roster full of young talent, but will face a stiff test right out of the gate.
The ANNIKA Intercollegiate presented by 3M, which takes place on Sept. 17-19 in Lake Elmo, Minnesota, is hosted by LPGA legend Annika Sorenstam and is fielding nine of the top 10 teams in the country from last season. Sorenstam feels like this year's event is "our strongest field to date."
The Cowgirls are excited to see how they stack up against the nation's best at one of the year's most prestigious events.
"It's really cool to start out with an event like the ANNIKA," said sophomore Stephanie Astrup. "It will show us what level we have to play at this season to play these schools and beat these schools."
This will be OSU's third appearance at the ANNIKA, but the first since the event moved to the Royal Golf Club in Minnesota. The Cowgirls finished third at the inaugural event in 2014 and also finished 10th in 2016.
"Ready or not, here we come," said freshman Faith Hopkins. "The ANNIKA is one of the top tournaments out there, and there are going to be a lot of really good players. My coach reminded me that we all put on our pants the same way and to go out there and do my thing."
The Cowgirls have many new faces on the team, but they are just as ready for this season as anyone else. Junior Michelle Forsland transferred to OSU from Jacksonville University, and is expected to provide a boost of veteran leadership for the Cowgirls.
"It's been great getting to know this team," Forsland said. "We've had a lot of fun. Everyone brings something special to the team. They're all working hard."
