Cowgirl Golf finishes second at NCAA Women's Championships
May 24, 2004 | Cowgirl Golf
The finish was Oklahoma State's best finish in school history. Twice the Cowgirls had finished third at the NCAA Championships. The second-place finish by sophomore Karin Sjodin was also the best by a Cowgirl individual in school history.
Sjodin shot a 71 during the final round, including an eight-foot putt on No. 18 that would have tied her for the individual lead if she had made it. However, she fell one stroke shy of tying California's Sarah Huarte, who won the individual medal with a 10-under par 278. Sjodin finished at 279.
OSU finished three strokes behind UCLA and eight strokes ahead of top-ranked Duke. The Cowgirls, ranked 10th nationally, had three top-20 finishes.
Freshman Mallory Underwood finished her first NCAA Championship with a one-under 287, tying for sixth place and earning honorable mention All-America honors. Junior Annie Thurman, who was five over after two rounds, shot an even-par 72 on Thursday and shot a two under 70 in the final round thanks to a sand blast eagle on hole No. 12.
Freshman Candy Herrera tied for 28th individually after carding a six-over 294. Fellow freshman Ashley Knoll, who shot an 86 during the first round, shot 78-74-75 during the final three rounds.
The four-round total of 1151 blew away the previous school record of 1189, shot at the 2002 NCAA Championships. Sjodin, Underwood and Thurman all broke the previous OSU record of 292 at an NCAA event, set by Maria Boden in 2001.
