Cowgirl Golf Sweeps Titles at Big 12 Championships
April 23, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
DALLAS, Texas – No. 23 Oklahoma State women's golf swept both the team and individual titles at the Big 12 Championships at the Dallas Athletic Club on Sunday, defeating runner-up Baylor by seven strokes while Maddison Hinson-Tolchard held off the field by a single stroke.
The victory marked Oklahoma State's 11th Big 12 title and its second in the last three years. In addition, Sunday was the seventh time in program history that the team captured both the team and individual trophies, the latest coming in 2016.
OSU entered the championship round with a slim two-stroke advantage over Texas Tech, but clutch play throughout the Cowgirl lineup held off a late surge from Baylor on the back nine.
Hinson-Tolchard began her final round in a three-way tie for first at 4-under and used a solid even-par round to claim a one-shot edge over runner up Pimkwan Chookaew of Iowa State. The win was the junior's first of the season and third of her career, the most recent coming at the NCAA Stillwater Regional in 2022.
Steady as ever, Hinson-Tolchard was tied for most pars in the field with 37 and pounced on her scoring opportunities, shooting 6-under on par-5 holes.
With the win, Oklahoma State earned medalist honors for the second consecutive season following Lianna Bailey's victory last season, a feat that had not been accomplished by two different Cowgirls since Maria Boden (2001) and Emma Zackrisson (2002). Hinson-Tolchard also became the program's 27th individual conference champion and 11th of the Big 12 era.
Making her first ever collegiate postseason appearance, Clemence Martin concluded her successful weekend in a tie for third at 1-under. The result was Martin's second top-10 outing of the season, matching her third-place finish at the Schooner Fall Classic back in September for her best as a Cowgirl.
As Baylor closed in down the stretch, Martin sank a long birdie putt on No. 16 to help fend off the Bear run.
Thitaporn Saithip signed off on the second-best finish of short career on Sunday, finishing tied for 13th at 4-over. The freshman was strong all weekend for Oklahoma State, firing rounds of 74-73-73 and draining a team-high 12 birdies.
Rina Tatematsu improved each day throughout the tournament, carding a 4-over 76 in the championship round to land in a tie for 34th.
Han-Hsuan Yu rounded out the Cowgirl lineup on Sunday with a 6-over 78, moving her into a tie for 21st.
Oklahoma State will return to action on May 8 for NCAA Regional play, where it will compete for a spot at the NCAA Championships in Scottsdale, Ariz. Sites for the 2023 NCAA Regionals will be announced on Wednesday, April 26th.
