Cowgirls Return To Texas For NCAA San Antonio Regional
May 06, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER – No. 22 Oklahoma State women's golf is headed back to Texas, where it will continue its postseason run at the NCAA San Antonio Regional at TPC San Antonio, beginning Monday morning. The field will compete on the Oaks Course, a par-72, 6,420-yard layout, which annually plays host to the PGA Tour's Valero Texas Open.
In a change announced by the NCAA in January, the top five teams from each of the six regional sites will now qualify for the national championship, bumping the field up from 24 finalists to 30. In addition, the low individual not on an advancing team from each regional will also qualify, as 156 total student-athletes will move on the play at the NCAA Championship at Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona.
The fourth-seeded Cowgirls are making the program's 29th regional appearance and will be aiming to return to the NCAA Championship for the third consecutive season.
The Cowgirls are one of just four teams ranked in GolfStat's top-25 traveling to San Antonio. Top-seeded Texas A&M is the field's highest ranked squad at No. 6, with Auburn right behind at No. 7. Pepperdine ranks 18th, just four spots ahead of OSU.
In 2022, Karsten Creek played host to the NCAA Stillwater Regional, where the Cowgirls punched their ticket to Grayhawk with a third-place finish and Maddison Hinson-Tolchard claimed the individual title.
Oklahoma State enters regional play with momentum after putting together its best performance of 2023, sweeping both the team and individual trophies at the Big 12 Championship in its most recent tournament. The Cowgirls beat runner-up Baylor by seven strokes, largely due to an incredible (-10) 278 in the second round. The win marked head coach Greg Robertson's second Big 12 title in the past three seasons.
After earning medalist honors at the Big 12 Championship, Hinson-Tolchard once again leads the Cowgirl lineup in San Antonio. The reigning Big 12 Player of the Year has been even better in 2023, leading the team in stroke average, rounds in the 60's and par-or-better rounds. The junior owns six top-10 outings this season to go along with her Big 12 title and has played 53 straight rounds in which her score counted towards the overall team score dating back to October of 2021.
While in Dallas, Hinson-Tolchard broke the program record for career par-or-better rounds with 51, surpassing the previous mark of 49 set by Kenzie Neisen. Her 70.77 scoring average this season also ranks second-best ever by a Cowgirl.
Currently ranked No. 10 in that nation by GolfStat, Hinson-Tolchard is the third-highest ranked player in the regional field.
Thitaporn Saithip returns to the starting lineup after finishing tied for 13th at the Big 12 Championship with steady rounds of 74-73-73 (+4) 220.
Making her seventh start of the season, Saithip has been a rock-solid piece for the Cowgirls. The freshman boasts a 72.55 stroke average, second-best on the team, and has played 11 counting rounds in a row.
Clemence Martin will be making her first NCAA postseason appearance following her spectacular top-3 finish at the Big 12 Championship. The T3 result matched the highest of her career and was her first top-10 of the spring.
The sophomore is third on the team in both stroke average at 72.65 and rounds in the 60's with five.
Veteran Han-Hsuan Yu joins the starting lineup for the ninth time this season. Yu is second on the team with a dozen par-or-better rounds and has compiled a 73.00 scoring average this season.
At the Big 12 Championship, Yu shot a 3-under 69 in the second round to help complete the Cowgirls' vital 10-under day.
Rina Tatematsu rounds out the Cowgirls in San Antonio. The junior will also be making her ninth start of the season and is third on the team with 10 par-or-better rounds played.
Oklahoma State is scheduled to tee off for the first round Monday at 8:00 a.m. CT on hole No. 10 alongside fifth-seeded SMU and sixth-seeded UCLA.
Live scoring for all six regionals will be available at GolfStat.com, while updates for the Cowgirls will also be on the team's social media as they become available.
