OSU Wraps Up Cardinal Classic
April 22, 2017 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track, Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
STILLWATER – Craig Nowak ran a three-second personal best to become one of just six men in the NCAA to run under 3:41 in the 1,500-meter run this season, and Molly Sughroue moved up nearly 40 spots in the West Region's 3,000-meter steeplechase standings Saturday at the final day of the Cardinal Classic.
Nowak's lifetime-best of 3:40.41 in the 1,500 moved the Cowboy senior to fifth in the NCAA. The time came behind a rabbit in NCAA mile champion Josh Kerr, who was tasked with leading the field to 59-second splits.
"I see confidence growing in Craig every week, and he's getting better and better because of it," coach Dave Smith said. "With Championship season coming up, I think he's still got big things ahead of him."
The Cowboy senior held a top-three place for the bulk of the race and finished with the No. 7 time in school history.
"He raced really well and really aggressive," Smith said. "He was close to the lead then took it with about 650 to go and led until the last 50 meters. He got passed by two guys but got one back to finish second and it was a great race for him."
With Nowak jumping into the 1,500-meter top-five in the region, OSU now owns two of the five best times in the West with Josh Thompson's 3:38.21 from the Bryan Clay Invitational sitting at No. 2.
Sughroue's 10:26.82 steeplechase time moved her into the No. 7 spot in school history and into the top-30 in the region.
"She has a much better understanding of how it feels to run a steeplechase," Smith said. "The first race can be rough, but today her water-jumps looked much better and I think as she gets more familiar with the event, she'll build up more confidence."
The time was nearly 20 seconds better than her previous personal best that came at Cobb Track in Palo Alto, California, earlier this month. Sughroue also moves up to third in the conference in the steeplechase to give the cowgirls nine top-three marks in the Big 12 this season.
The John McDonnell Invitational opened competition on the track today after inclement weather delayed the meet Friday evening.
Ambra Wesley came away with a personal-best in the 800-meter run becoming the seventh Cowgirl to break 2:10 this year with her 2:09.81 that earned her a third-place finish.
OSU's seven women with sub-2:10 800-meter times leads the conference. The only other program with multiple women under the mark is Oklahoma with two.
Jacob Fincham-Dukes finished fifth in the 100-meter dash and Emily Hart ran another PR in the 100-meter hurdles at the meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
The 108th Drake Relays is the only meet on the schedule next weekend. The last time OSU made the trip to Des Moines, the Cowgirls made history when they became the fourth team in meet history to sweep the distance relays.
