Ames, Iowa---- The further depleted Oklahoma State Cowboys found themselves in position to win after the first 20 minutes in a 58-50 loss to Iowa State at the Hilton Coliseum on Monday night.
Starters Leyton Hammonds and Jeffrey Carroll did not play. Hammonds sat out with a dislocated finger, and Carroll did not make the trip due to an illness.
A 10-0 run that was capped off with a Tyree Griffin jumper cut the Oklahoma State deficit to 53-47 with 2:02 left.Tavarious Shine stepped to the line with 17 seconds remaining to cut the deficit to 58-50, but the Cyclones kept the ball as the clocked ticked down to hang on for the win.
Although they were missing two more starters, the Cowboys still found themselves in a two-point game at the start of the second half.
Iowa State used a 9-0 run to take a 38-25 lead at the first media timeout, but a Shine three cut the deficit to 40-29 with 14:11 remaining.
The first half couldn't have gone much better for the Cowboys. In his first career start, Chris Olivier got Oklahoma State on the board first with a 2-0 lead.
The teams were tied at seven at the first media timeout of the half with 15:58 left as the Cowboys held Iowa State to two-of-seven shooting to start.
Oklahoma State continued to play well for the next few minutes and took an 18-16 lead into the third media timeout with 8:21 left.
The Cyclones eventually took a 27-25 lead into halftime.
Abdel Nader led the way for Iowa State with 19 points and five rebounds.
Oklahoma State had key performances from Jeff Newberry and Olivier. Newberry finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Olivier finished with eight points and six rebounds.
