TULSA, Okla. – After taking two out of three from Iowa State last weekend, the Oklahoma Softball team was unable to continue its winning ways against Tulsa on Wednesday, as the Cowgirls fell, 3-0, at the Collins Family Softball Complex.
Oklahoma State was stymied by Tulsa starter Caitlin Sill, who allowed only three hits in a complete game shutout. Tulsa's bats were limited by multiple highlight plays from the OSU defense, but a first-inning score and a pair of runs in the third would be all the Golden Hurricane would need.
"We made good contact and had some hard-hit balls, but it was tough to catch a break," head coach Rich Wieligman said. "Tulsa found a few holes, and that's just the way the game goes sometimes. Still, we've got four more opportunities to get back in the win column this weekend."
The Cowgirls (19-23, 3-6) produced a scoring chance right off the bat, as Shianne Hughes worked back-to-back one-out walks in the top of the first. However, the OSU lineup was unable to construct a run and crack Sill, who retired Vanessa Shippy and Mallory Collins to end the inning.
In the bottom of the opening frame, OSU starter Brandi Needham retired two of the first three Tulsa batters, but the Golden Hurricane capitalized on its run-scoring opportunity, as Julie Kernen delivered a two-out RBI single through the right side. TU nearly tacked on to its hot start, but Collins made a spectacular catch at the wall for the third out of the inning.
Tulsa would add to its lead in the third, beginning with Brittany Walker's RBI single to right. With one out and runners on first and third, Maddie Withee produced an RBI groundout to short, giving the home side a 3-0 lead after three innings of play.
Oklahoma State threatened again in the fourth when Mikkelson reached second on a throwing error from short, placing her in scoring position with nobody out. Despite having to deal with the heart of the OSU lineup, Sill maintained the shutout by retiring Shippy, Collins and Michaela Patton in order.
The Cowgirls managed to make things tight in the seventh, as Danielle Riddle and Randee O'Donnell reached on a walk and single, respectively. Oklahoma State's hopes of a comeback would be dashed, though, as Sill struck out Miranda Cavin and forced a ground out from Shelby Davis to clinch the victory.
O'Donnell led the Cowgirls offensively with two base-hits, including a double in the fifth. The freshman has recorded seven hits in the last four contests, bringing her season average up to .262.
Oklahoma State will look to avenge the defeat in Thursday's matchup against the Golden Hurricane. The game is set to begin at 7 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium.
