Cowgirl Softball Remain Perfect in Florida

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Oklahoma State softball team continued its strong showing at the USF Spring Invitational Saturday by defeating Boston University 7-1 and capitalized on Simone Freeman's 15 strikeouts to beat Robert Morris, 3-0. The Cowgirls improved to 18-12 on the season and extend their winning streak to 11 games.
In the first game on the day, the Cowgirl's came out swinging. OSU got on the board in the bottom of the first inning. Senior Samantha Chrisman hit a two-run double to centerfield scoring junior Shannon Kaufman and junior Tarah Ettinger. Later in the inning, senior Amy Graham doubled to centerfield, scoring Chrisman and freshman Tiffany Mikkelson to give the Cowgirls a 4-0 lead.
The Cowgirls added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Chrisman belted a three-run home run to left center to give OSU a 7-0 after two innings.
The Terriers tried to mount a rally in the top of the sixth innings when Lauren Hynes doubled home Emily Felbaum. However, one run was all they'd get and the Cowgirls would take game one by a score of 7-1.
Senior starter Kat Espinosa (10-6) went five innings and didn't give up a run and only allowed two hits. Reliever, Freeman pitched two innings, allowing a run on one hit.
The Cowgirls racked up nine hits in the game. Senior Tamara Brown was 2-for-4, while Chrisman was 2-for-2 with a double, a home run and five RBIs.
Game two proved to be a pitching duel and the game remained scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when freshman Erika Campbell had a pinch hit single, scoring Shianne Hughes from second base. Later in the innings, sophomore Taylor Woodall hit a two-run home run to left field, giving the Cowgirls the 3-0 win. Brown, Chrisman, and Shelby Davis also had hits for the Cowgirls.
Freeman (8-6) was almost untouchable in the circle. She did not give up a run on five hits and struck out 15 of the batters that she faced.
The Cowgirls concluded the tournament tomorrow against LIU Brooklyn at 8:30 a.m. CT.
