Cowgirls Extend Winning Streak to Nine

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Oklahoma State softball team won two games Friday in the USF Spring Invitational and extend its winning streak to nine games. The Cowgirls (16-12) defeated Rutgers, 2-1, in eight innings and Maryland,1-0.
In the first game, the game remained scoreless until the top of the eighth inning when Stephanie Huang scored on a pass ball to give Rutgers (7-7) a 1-0 lead.
The Cowgirls responded quickly in the bottom of the inning. Freshman Shianne Hughes scored on a double by senior Tamara Brown. Later in the inning, junior Tarah Ettinger hit the walk off single to right center, scoring senior Stephanie Brewer and giving the Cowgirls the 2-1 victory.
Offensively, Brown went 2-for-3 in the game with an RBI and a double. Brewer, Ettinger, seniors Amy Graham and Samantha Chrisman all had a hit for the Cowgirls.
Starter junior Simone Freeman allowed no runs on one hit in four innings and struck out four. Reliever senior Kat Espinosa (8-7) went four innings, picking up the win, allowing one run on no hits and striking out three.
Game two against Maryland (9-15) proved to be a pitching duel as well. The Cowgirls scored first in the bottom of the first inning when Brown scored on a passed ball.
That was all the offense OSU would need, starter Espinosa was once again dominate in the circle, pitching four scoreless innings and only allowing two hits. Espinosa also struck out four. Freeman came on in relief to earn the save. She didn't allow a run or a hit in three innings.
On the offensive side, Brown, junior Shannon Kaufman and sophomore Shelby Davis all had hits for the Cowgirls.
The Cowgirls return to action at the USF Spring Invitational tomorrow when they take on Boston at 12:15 p.m. CT and Robert Morris at 5:15 p.m.
