Three straight NCAA Championship Appearances, two Big 12 Championships and one NCAA Runner-up finish later – the Cowgirls are taking a trip down to Norman.
The Bedlam Cup is back.
For the first time in seven years, Oklahoma State and Oklahoma women's golf will battle at the sixth rendition of the Bedlam Cup on Friday at Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club. With both sides clashing in their first match-play event of the season, play will open at 8 a.m. CT. The event is free to the public with no tickets necessary.Â
"It'll be fun, especially against a rival like Oklahoma," head coach Greg Robertson said. "They've got a good team, and you certainly don't want to lose to the team in Norman. It's going to be an exciting event."
Â
Following a format similar to the Ryder Cup and Solheim Cup, play kicks off with three four-ball (best ball) matches in the morning, followed by six singles matches starting at 1:30 p.m. Each four-ball (best ball) and singles match will award a team point in the format, leaving nine team points up for grabs during the competition.Â
With the Cowgirls and Sooners competing in the same field in four fall tournaments, Oklahoma State carries a 3-1 lead with higher placements at the Carmel Cup, Schooner Fall Classic and Illini Women's Invitational before ending two shots behind the Sooners at the Jim West Challenge.
In a schedule filled with stroke play, the Cowgirls and Sooners have become good acquaintances on-and-off the course. But with match play on the horizon, the competition level is rising.Â
"I have friends on this team [Oklahoma], but when it comes to golf – we want this title," said Clemence Martin, a junior golfer for OSU women's golf. "We didn't have this tournament the last few years, so having this is really exciting." Â
While missing match-play meetings, both sides have posted impressive moments in stroke play throughout the spring. In a field of six top-25 teams, Oklahoma State held the team lead for most of the opening round at the Valspar Augusta Invitational this month, while the Sooners placed second at its most recent tournament, the Westbrook Invitational, carding a 15-under 273 to exit play.
"I think it will be so much fun," said Ellie Bushnell, a freshman golfer for OSU women's golf. "I haven't really experienced playing in competition like this with how everybody has been hyping it up. So I think it will be a lot of fun, I'm really looking forward to it."
Â
The Cowgirls enter Jimmie Austin OU Golf Club with a 3-2 lead in Bedlam Cup's series history and a 2-1 edge in Norman, with former Cowgirls Kelsey Vines, Julie Yang, Maddie McCrary and Linnea Johansson, among others, battling at the event before later going on tour.
As Oklahoma State takes its first trip of the spring down I-35 on Friday, fans are encouraged to watch throughout the event.Â
"If anybody wants to watch some good golf and support the Cowgirls, we'd love to see orange out there while we're playing," Robertson said.
