Cowboy Wrestling Wins CKLV Invitational, Two Individual Titles
December 07, 2024 | Cowboy Wrestling
LAS VEGAS - The No. 3 Oklahoma State wrestling team won the Cliff Keen Las Vegas Invitational Saturday evening, claiming two individual titles from heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson and 174-pounder Dean Hamiti Jr.
Â
The Cowboys routed the field, earning 192 team points and coming up just short of the record 198.25 points set by Oklahoma State in 1983. They outscored second-place Nebraska by 77 points and combined for a 48-10 record with beating 31 ranked wrestlers and 18 conference opponents. An impressive 25 bonus-point wins also helped bolster OSU's historical point total.
It was a strong performance by the entire lineup, as all 10 Cowboys placed no lower than fifth, becoming the first team to do so since 1999 and just the fourth ever. OSU is responsible for all four of those performances, and no other collegiate wrestling program has accomplished that feat.
Â
Wyatt Hendrickson continued his stellar start to his Cowboy career by claiming the heavyweight title. Hendrickson received the top seed at his weight and used that to rattle off five straight victories, three coming against ranked wrestlers and the final two over opponents in the top eight. His efforts earned the tournament's Outstanding Wrestler award.
Â
Hendrickson started off the day with an injury default win over the eighth-ranked Nick Feldman from Ohio State to put him in the championship bout. There, Hendrickson put on a show by defeating No. 6 Isaac Trumble (NC State) with a pin in just 2:35. Over his five matches, he had three pins and none of his five bouts went the distance.
Â
Dean Hamiti Jr. had a similar weekend at 174 pounds. Starting in the semifinals, Hamiti cruised past Cornell's No. 13 Simon Ruiz, 14-1, to set up a championship bout between the fifth-ranked Cowboy and Stanford's Lorenzo Norman, ranked No. 8 in the country. Tied 3-3 heading into the third period, Hamiti began in the top position and stayed there for the final two minutes to earn a crucial riding time point that clinched the championship.
Â
The 174-pounder maintained his perfect season with a 9-0 record, while eight of those wins have come in bonus-point fashion.
Â
Tagen Jamison placed second at 141 pounds but earned the highest-ranked win of his career in the semifinals, defeating Nebraska's No. 4 Brock Hardy by a 7-4 decision. Jamison's only other victory against an opponent ranked that high came last year, also against Hardy at the 2023 CKLV Invitational.
Â
Dustin Plott claimed a runner-up finish in the 184-pound bracket. He started his day with a stout semifinal victory over Rider's No. 31 Isaac Dean, 2-0, but ultimately fell to defending national champion Parker Keckeisen of Northern Iowa in the finals.
Â
The final Cowboy to earn a runner-up result was No. 9 Cameron Amine. He won the semifinal bout, 4-1, over Nebraska's No. 20 Bubba Wilson and was then matched up against the third-ranked 165-pounder out of West Virginia, Peyton Hall. Amine was in the bout the whole way through, but Hall earned the championship with a takedown in sudden victory.
Â
Caleb Fish had a breakout weekend at 157 pounds in his first official as a Cowboy. He took home a trio of top-12 ranked wins over the weekend, including an 11-0 major decision over 10th-ranked Paniro Johnson of Iowa State. A medical forfeit by Ohio State's No. 9 Paddy Gallagher than gave Fish the third-place finish.
Â
At 125 pounds, Troy Spratley closed out his weekend in rollercoaster fashion. He started the day with a stumble against No. 3 Matt Ramos, but quickly bounced back with a major decision over No. 24 Maximo Renteria. Keeping the momentum, Spratley claimed the highest-ranked victory of his career, defeating Nebraska's second-ranked Caleb Smith, 2-0, in the third-place match. Spratley also defeated Wyoming's Jore Volk two weeks ago in Stillwater when Volk was ranked second in the country.
Â
Veteran Luke Surber earned four straight consolation victories to fight all the way back to third place, capped by an 8-2 victory over Wyoming's No. 17 Joey Novak.
Reece Witcraft closed out his tournament with back-to-back ranked victories, but dropped a highly contested third-place match to No. 15 Nic Bouzakis of Ohio State. Witcraft executed a seven-point move in the final seconds of the third period to send it into sudden victory, but Bouzakis was then able to score the decisive takedown.
Â
Carter Young placed fifth in the 149-pound bracket and notched two ranked wins on the day. The first was a major decision over a fellow Big 12 opponent, No 17Â Colin Realbuto of UNI, while the second came over Rider's No. 22 Sammy Alavarez in the fifth-place match.
Â
The Cowboys return to action Friday night as they take on Oklahoma in Norman at McCasland Field House.
