Cowgirls Ready For Split Weekend At Big 12 Match Play, ORU Spring Invite
April 06, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
STILLWATER, Okla. – No. 23 Oklahoma State women's golf is set to close its regular season at the Big 12 Match Play in Scottsdale, Ariz. at Kierland Golf Club, beginning on Friday.
All nine conference teams will compete at the par-72, 6,337-yard course. The weekend will begin with three rounds of pool play, with every team squaring off against a pair of opponents each round in match play format. Following pool play, the top four finishers will advance to the championship bracket, and the next four teams moving to a consolation bracket to compete for fifth.
The Cowgirls have seen much success against the Big 12 this season boasting a 14-2 record against leagues foes, including a perfect 5-0 sweep over in-state rival Oklahoma. The upcoming weekend will serve as another tough test for the Cowgirls, as six of the conference's eight opponents are currently ranked inside the top-50 by GolfStat.
Additionally, Oklahoma State is 7-4 in match play under fourth-year head coach Greg Robertson, the most recent victory coming over Oklahoma at the Red Raider Match Play last April.
Reigning Big 12 Player of the Year Maddison Hinson-Tolchard leads the Cowgirls for the final time this regular season. Last time out, Hinson-Tolchard finished in a tie for eighth at the Clemson Invitational, her third consecutive top-10 outing and fifth of the season.
Hinson-Tolchard has put together a stellar junior campaign, leading the squad in an abundance of categories. She is also chasing a pair of program records, as her stroke average of 70.78 and 48 career par-or-better rounds both rank second in Cowgirl history.
Han-Hsuan Yu returns to the starting lineup after competing as an individual at The Bruzzy, where she landed in a tie for 13th at 7-over. She is second on the team with 11 par-or-better rounds and brings a wealth of experience to the lineup with 114 rounds played as a Cowgirl.
Last season, Yu went 3-0 at the Red Raider Match Play, defeating opponents from Tulsa, Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
Thitaporn Saithip will make her first match play appearance of her collegiate career after putting together a strong freshman season. She has made five starts for Oklahoma State this season and is second on the team with a 72.41 stroke average.
Saithip has thrived through consistent play as of late, as she led the field in pars at the Clemson Invitational with 43 and has played eight rounds in a row in which her individual score counted towards the team's overall score.
Rina Tatematsu joins the Cowgirl lineup for the eighth time this season. The junior has compiled a 73.00 stroke average this season and is third on the team with 10 par-or-better rounds.
Clemence Martin makes her seventh start of the season and first match play appearance for the Cowgirls on Friday. The sophomore's scoring average of 72.82 is third-best on the team and has recorded four rounds in the 60's.
Hailey Jones is also headed to Scottsdale, having made seven starts for the Cowgirls throughout the season. The senior is 4-2-1 in match play events during her career, highlighted by a pair of wins to help secure the East Lake Cup title in October of 2021.
The tournament is scheduled to tee off with a shotgun start Friday morning at 9:30 a.m. CT. Oklahoma State will face Texas and Kansas in the morning round and take on Baylor and Kansas State in the afternoon.
Oklahoma State women's golfers Emma Whitaker, Ashton Begley and Jenna Solheim are also scheduled to play as individuals at the ORU Spring Invite in Broken Arrow, Okla. at the Club at Indian Springs on Monday.
Emma Whitaker will be playing in the 22nd tournament of her career, fifth-most among the Cowgirls. In October, Whitaker landed in a tie for 21st at the Grace Shin Invitational, her highest finish since the Anuenue Spring Break Classic in March of 2019.
Like Whitaker, Ashton Begley also had a solid showing at the Grace Shin Invitational, finishing tied for fifth, the highest placement of her career. Monday will mark Begley's third appearance of the season.
Jenna Solheim makes her first appearance of the spring and second of the season after competing in the Grace Shin Invitational in October as well.
