April 07, 2023 | Cowgirl Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – No. 4 Oklahoma State took down the top two seeded teams and went undefeated to sit atop the standings after the first day at Big 12 Match Play in Scottsdale, Ariz. on Friday.
The Cowgirls completed the afternoon with 12 points, half a point ahead of second-place Baylor. OSU owns a full two-point cushion over fifth-place TCU for the fourth and final spot to advance to the championship bracket Saturday afternoon.
"We were proud of the way they competed throughout the day," head coach Greg Robertson said. "Despite getting down early to some tough opponents, they kept themselves in it until the end, and we were able to secure a couple big points on the last hole this afternoon. We're looking forward to another competitive day tomorrow."
Oklahoma State began its day with matchups against top-seeded Texas and No. 7 Kansas, defeating the Longhorns, 4-1-0, and tying the Jayhawks, 2-2-1.
Han-Hsuan Yu completed an undefeated morning with wins over Texas' Bohyun Park and Kansas' Jordan Rothman, both by 2&1. Rina Tatematsu also picked up a pair of wins with a 2&1 victory over Emily Odwin from Texas and downing Johanna Ebner of Kansas, 3&2.
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard claimed the final hole against Angela Heo to secure the Cowgirl victory over Texas and halved Kansas' Abby Glynn as well.
Playing in her first ever match play as a Cowgirl, Thitaporn Saithip fell to Emily Odwin of Texas, 2&1, and Esme Hamilton from Kansas, 5&4.
Clemence Martin, also making her collegiate match play debut, dropped a pair of tight matches to UT's Bentley Cotton and KU's Lauren Clark.
In the afternoon round, Oklahoma State once again went 1-0-1 with a victory over second-seeded Baylor and tie against No. 9 Kansas State.
Hinson-Tolchard recorded wins against both Hannah Karg of Baylor, 3&2, and Kansas State's Remington Isaac, 2&1. As a whole, the reigning Big 12 Player of the Year finished her day with three wins and a draw.
Martin found her groove in the afternoon, beating BU's Sera Hasegawa on the final hole and dominating Noa van Beek of KSU, 7&5.
After a solid outing in the morning, Tatematsu continued her run with a victory and tie in the second round. The junior captured hole No. 18 over both opponents to take the match against Baylor's Rosie Belsham and force the draw with KSU's Gabriela McNelly.
Hailey Jones was inserted into the Cowgirl lineup in the afternoon and defeated Baylor's BaiMai Seema, 3&1, to help defeat the Bears. She also lost a tight battle to Manon Donche-Gay of Kansas State, 1 UP.
Han-Hsuan Yu dropped both afternoon matches to Baylor's Silje Ohma and Kansas State's Haley Vargas.
Oklahoma State tees off against Texas Tech and TCU tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. CT for the final round of pool play before advancing to either the championship or consolation bracket in the afternoon.
