Cowgirls In Third After First Day At Pebble Beach
September 02, 2022 | Cowgirl Golf
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. ---- Oklahoma State women's golf opened the 2022-23 season Friday morning at the Carmel Cup and finished the day in third place after posting a combined 366 in the first round.
Sitting at 6-over, the Cowgirls will take on the illustrious, par-72 Pebble Beach Golf Links for the second round tomorrow morning. Currently, Oklahoma State trails the co-leaders, Stanford and Texas A&M, by eight shots, but owns a five-stroke advantage over fourth place Arkansas.
The Carmel Cup is unique in its scoring format compared to most collegiate tournaments, having six players tee off for each team and counting the top five individual scores, rather than the common four counting scores format most events utilize.
Han-Hsuan Yu came out of the gates firing on all cylinders, racking up seven birdies on the front-nine, and would eventually finish the day with nine, the most in the field. She carded a 3-under 69 and ended the round in a tie for third.
Maddison Hinson-Tolchard was not far behind at 2-under, posting a 70 in her first round since being named the Big 12 Player of the Year and an All American the previous season. A junior, she continued her steady ways, as she ended the day with 14 pars, tied for the highest total among the 48 players in the event.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Thitaporn Saithip carded a solid 73, just one over par. She is currently tied for 14th.
Hailey Jones remained in the top-20, as well, sitting in a tie for 18th following a 2-over 74.
Cecilie Leth-Nissen and Rina Tatematsu rounded out the Cowgirl lineup, finishing in ties for 38th and 46th. Leth-Nissen, another freshman making her first appearance on the collegiate level, recorded an 80, while Tatematsu ended the day with an 82.
This weekend, Oklahoma State will be looking for the program's 104th tournament win in OSU history, and its second-straight season-opening victory.
The Cowgirls tee off tomorrow morning for the second round, with Saithip being the first off at 8:50 a.m. CT.
