NEW ORLEANS, La. - Oklahoma State's men's tennis team tallied a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon against the No. 35 Memphis Tigers to extend its winning streak on the road to two matches.Â
With the win, the Cowboys improved to 9-6 on the year. Additionally, Oklahoma State collected its 11th consecutive doubles point of the season.Â
Oklahoma State started with an early advantage after notching doubles victories on courts one and three. The Cowboy duo of Leighton Allen and Fran Pini struck quickly and collected a 6-1 victory over Patrick Sydow and Pau Fanlo. Oscar Cutting and Pablo Alemany were quick to answer back on court two against Max Verboven and Alex Garcia with a 7-5 win to even the match.
With the doubles point up for grabs, court one rose to the occasion for the Cowboys. Tyler Zink and Seb Nothhaft easily handled court one against No. 22 David Stevenson and Jeremy Taylor. Zink secured a crucial deuce point while play was knotted to give the lead back to OSU, 6-5. An easy 7-5 closeout secured the point for the Cowboys and notched the tandem's second top-25 takedown of the year.Â
Memphis was able to rattle off two consecutive singles points as Pablo Alemany defeated Leighton Allen on court five, 6-0, 6-1. The momentum rolled to court three, as David Stevensons downed Seb Nothhaft in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3, to give the Tigers the overall advantage, 2-1.Â
The Cowboys remained consistent throughout the entirety of singles to not allow another point. After a slow start on court four that saw Max Verboven trail, 6-2, the junior was able to bounce back versus Pau Fanlo in similar fashion, 6-2. A dominating third-set victory by Verboven, 6-1, swung the momentum back for the Cowboys and helped fuel the rally across the remaining courts.Â
Fran Pini was the lone Cowboy of the day to secure an opening-set victory. The freshman took the court against Harry Rock and wasted no time in the first, 6-4. The Tiger handled the second set, 6-4, and Pini easily closed out his third set on court six, 6-2, to push the Cowboys back into the lead, 3-2.Â
Courts one and two consisted of back-and-forth battles throughout the entirety of the day. Tyler Zink squared off with Memphis's Oscar Cutting. Cutting struck first, halting Zink to secure the opening set, 6-4. The Cowboy was fast to answer with a crucial second-set tiebreaker, 7-6(5). Zink put on a show to clinch the match for OSU in dominating fashion, 6-4.Â
When the match was decided, Alex Garcia was trailing to No. 113 Jeremy Taylor, 4-6, 6-2, 5-5.
