Oklahoma State Falls to No. 7 Iowa State, 20-12
January 30, 2022 | Cowboy Wrestling
STILLWATER - The third-ranked Oklahoma State wrestling team dropped the second of its two duals this weekend, 20-12, to No. 7 Iowa State. It marks the first time the Cowboys have dropped a dual to the Cyclones since Jan. 24, 2010.Â
"We need to recognize that we have a young group out there, so we need some experience," head coach John Smith said. "We need to be embarrassed a little bit. Hopefully, we grow from these two matches, and we move forward. I believe that will probably happen for us. It's not given; it's going to have to take some work."
Dustin Plott gave the Cowboys their first lead of the dual at 174 pounds after the teams had traded victories in the six matches prior. A 6-1 decision over No. 18 Joel Devine improved the sophomore's record to 9-1 on the season with five ranked wins.
That was the last time the Pokes would see the lead as the 12-10 advantage diminished with the Cyclones winning each of the last three bouts. Dakota Geer and Luke Surber lost to higher-ranked counterparts by decision, while Gavin Stika gave up a major decision to No. 16 Yonger Bastida at 197 pounds.
In the earlier matches, Daton Fix and Kaden Gfeller picked up their second ranked wins of the weekend, while Travis Wittlake bounced back from last night's loss. Fix took down No. 33 Ramazan Attasauov with a 5-1 decision, while Gfeller won a hard-fought match with No. 21 Jarrett Degen, 6-4, in sudden victory. Gfeller took an early lead with a takedown in the first after another one was rewarded but overturned after the Iowa State bench challenged the ruling. Degen came back strong late in the third period to tie the bout at 4 before the two-minute sudden victory period where Gfeller would eventually work for the takedown and secure the win.
"I pointed at my heart because it took heart in that match, specifically," Gfeller said. "With everything I've been through in the last couple years, that was a cool moment for me to come back and beat a wrestler like that in Gallagher."
Trevor Mastrogiovanni suffered his first loss of the season in a 2-1 decision to No. 19 Kysen Terukina to open the match. Carter Young and Wyatt Sheets each dropped their matches against Iowa State's Ian Parker and top-ranked David Carr, respectively.
"There's a ton of opportunities to get better now," Fix said. "I think we can look at this two ways: we dwell on it and go backward from here or use it as motivation to help us jump levels. This is the perfect time to jump levels heading right into the postseason."
Oklahoma State, now 10-2 overall and 4-2 in Big 12 matches, will look to return to the win column Friday night against No. 23 South Dakota State. The Cowboys will then travel to No. 13 Missouri for a dual with the Tigers at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
