Pentathlon And DMR Highlight Strong First Day Of Razorback Invitational
January 28, 2022 | Cowgirl Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The Oklahoma State men's and women's indoor track and field teams were back in Fayetteville for day one of the Razorback Invitational on Friday.
The women's pentathlon was the highlight of the day for the Cowgirls with Maddie Meiner, Bailey Golden and Olivija Vaitaityte all surpassing Golden's school record in the pentathlon. They logged scores of 4,098, 4,030 and 4,028, respectively. All three currently find themselves in the top 15 nationally in the event.
"It's a big moment for the program to have three women over 4,000 points," said throws and multis coach Josh Langley. "I'm happy for all three, though I don't think any of them are satisfied. We will get recovered and get back to work next week with bigger things on our minds."
In the men's distance medley relay, the Cowboys crossed the line in 9:28.88, which currently leads the country and is fourth in program history. The combination of Fouad Messaoudi, Justin Smith, Juan Diego Castro and Ryan Schoppe defeated the rest of the field by almost three seconds for the collegiate lead in 2022.
"They competed well and ran hard," said Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith. "I think that time should get us in (to the national championships), we'll have to watch over the next few weeks to see what happens, but that time has never not made it so I feel pretty good about it."
In the women's DMR, Gabija Galvydyte, Christina Ollison, Stephanie Moss and Taylor Roe placed second with a time of 11:05.10, which is currently second nationally in the event.
Sam Mason beat his previous personal best in the men's weight throw with a distance of 18.05, which vaults him into second place in Cowboy history behind Olympian Nick Miller.
In the men's 600m, DeJuana McArthur finished in third place, posting a time of 1:18.50. Elijah Berry, Cooper Newsome and Kobe Christiansen found themselves sixth, seventh and ninth overall, respectively, giving the Cowboys four in the top 10.
For the women's 600m, Michaela Travers came in second with a personal-best time of 1:31.18. Mackenzie Michael placed sixth, followed by Jinah Mickens-Malik in seventh and Nicolette Dixon in ninth.
"I'm excited for tomorrow, I think our athletes all across the board competed really really hard," Smith said. "I saw a bunch of kids fight and scrap in everything they did and I think that sets a tone tomorrow hopefully that carries on and we'll have a lot more re-writing of our record books tomorrow."
