Cowgirl Equestrian Set To Compete At Big 12 Championships

The Basics
Oklahoma State's third-ranked equestrian team is set to compete at the Big 12 Championship this weekend at the Willis Family Equestrian Center in Waco, Texas. The Cowgirls open with semifinal action Friday at 10 a.m. against Baylor.
Four Big 12 programs – Baylor, Oklahoma State, TCU and affiliate member Fresno State – will compete in four Equestrian disciplines: Fences, Flat, Horsemanship and Reining.
The Cowgirls earned the top seed at the tourney, followed by No. 2 Fresno State, No. 3 TCU and No. 4 Baylor. All four squads are ranked in the top 10 of the NCEA rankings: No. 3 Oklahoma State, No. 5 Fresno State, No. 7 TCU and No. 10 Baylor.
With OSU and Baylor getting things started with Reining, Fresno State and TCU will compete in Fences to start the day. On Saturday, the consolation round begins at 9:30 a.m. with the championship round starting 30 minutes after the consolation round is complete.
OSU enters the Big 12 Championship with a 4-1 record. Since its opening meet loss at TCU, the Cowgirls earned four-straight conference wins, taking down Baylor twice, Fresno State and TCU all within seven days.
Oklahoma State is 27-13 all-time against the Bears.
Due to venue size, health protocols and CDC guidelines, the Big 12 Conference members have determined fans will not be permitted at this year's Championship.
The Cowgirls at the Big 12 Championship
OSU is on a quest for the program's seventh conference title and first since the 2017-18 season. Last season, the Big 12 Championship was canceled due to Covid-19. The last time OSU competed for a conference title was the 2018-19 season when the Cowgirls were 8-7 on the year and finished in second place at the Big 12 Championship after defeating TCU, 13-7, and losing in the title meet to Baylor by a raw score in a 10-10 (2920-2628.8) tiebreaker.
About the Cowgirls
The Cowgirls are led by 22nd-year head coach Larry Sanchez, second-year assistants Laura Brainard and Olivia Dorey and graduate assistant Caroline Becker.
Who to Watch
"I could not be more excited about the depth and maturity of our team this year," head coach Larry Sanchez said. "Our senior class has shown great leadership throughout this year, and the entire team cannot wait to compete this weekend."
Katie Schell opened the season with MOP honors at TCU and finished off the regular season undefeated in Fences. In Flat, Shell heads into the Big 12 Championships 3-1-1.
Team Captain Abigail Brayman enters the Big 12 Championship 4-1 in Flat, going undefeated in March and claiming MOP honors against Fresno State. Brayman is 2-3 on the season in Fences.
Harley Huff is the reigning Big 12 Horsemanship Rider of the Year and went 4-1 on the season, with her lone loss coming at the hands of a narrow defeat against Fresno State. She enters the Big 12 Championship off of two consecutive wins.
