Pena Tops Charts In Cowboy Basketball Combine Testing
July 09, 2020 | Cowboy Basketball
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State basketball team posted some impressive numbers during its NBA Combine testing, none more so than those put up by Cowboy freshman Montreal Pena.
The 6-10, Arlington, Texas native recorded a standing reach of just under 9 feet (8 feet 11-7/8 inches) and produced a max vertical leap of 42.5 inches.
In last year's NBA Combine, Pena's jump would have finished second only to 6-4 guard Jalen Lecque, who cleared 43 inches exactly. In fact, a player of Pena's size hasn't recorded a leap of 42.5 or better at the NBA Combine since records became available in 2000.
To put this jump into context, Cowboy great Markel Brown famously led all players at the 2014 NBA Combine with a max vertical leap of 43.5 inches, and he was 6-3.
Pena was one of three Cowboys to join the 40-inch club. Isaac Likekele jumped 41.5 inches and Avery Anderson III was at 40 inches exactly.
Pena's 7 foot wingspan was topped only by Kalib Boone, who turned in a mark of 7-2, and was matched by freshman guard Cade Cunningham.
The hands of the 2020 Naismith High School Trophy winner, who checked in at 6-8 in shoes, were measured at 10.5 inches. Likekele's hands topped the charts at 11 inches.
Donovan Williams tallied 15 reps of 185 pounds on the bench press, which is an impressive number for a freshman. Junior Dee Mitchell led the squad with 18 reps, while sophomore Chris Harris had 15 and grad transfer Ferron Flavors put up 13.
Anderson (3.07), Matthew-Alexander Moncreiffe (3.04) and Rondel Walker (3.07) showed impressive speed in the ¾ court sprint
OSU's testing was conducted under the supervision of strength & conditioning coach Jake Manzelmann with full COVID-19 social distancing measures in place.
The Cowboys are slated to open the season against Green Bay on Nov. 10 in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Season tickets are on sale now and start at just $150. Visit okstate.com/tickets or call 877-ALL-4-OSU for more info.
