Oklahoma State Big 12 Championship Notes
?The Basics
After an arduous season, Oklahoma State (12-19, 5-13 Big 12) will enter the 2019 Phillips 66 Big 12 Championship with momentum. The Cowboys, who dismissed four players in January, are now firing on all cylinders. After falling at No. 8 Texas Tech in overtime and to No. 13 Kansas in a nail-biter, OSU broke through with a 67-64 victory at Baylor and followed it up with an 85-77 win over West Virginia in the season finale. The Cowboys will be the No. 9 seed and will face the eighth-seeded Horned Frogs of TCU. The Cowboys and Horned Frogs (19-12, 7-11 Big 12) split their regular season meetings. TCU is led by the All-Big 12 trio of Desmond Bane, Alex Robinson and Kouat Noi.
?On the Air
The matchup will air on ESPNU at 6 p.m. Central. The crew of Jon Sciambi, Robbie Hummel will handle the on-air duties. The webcast is available at WatchESPN.com or the WatchESPN app. Dave Hunziker and John Holcomb will have the Cowboy Radio Network call, which can also be heard on TuneIn Radio or on satellite radio Sirius 135 and XM 199.
?Revitalized Cowboys
Down to seven scholarship players after the dismissal of four players, Mike Boynton set aside his birthday plans and held walk-on tryouts at 6 p.m. on Jan. 17 in Gallagher-Iba Arena. Six of the 48 participants got a call back to join the Cowboys, and Boynton credits these walk-ons with helping OSU regain its edge with competitive and lively practices. Over the last four games, OSU has taken two top-15 squads to the brink, beat Baylor in Waco for the first time since 2015 and won its regular season-finale against West Virginia.
Â
?Big 12's Best Shot Blocker
At 6-10 with a 7'0 1/2" wing span, Yor Anei is a natural shot blocker. The freshman leads the Big 12 and ranks eighth nationally with 2.52 blocks per game. His 78 blocks are the third most in school history, but are only seven shy of tying the school record of 85 set by Andre Williams in 2002-03. Since the start of March, Anei is averaging 6.0 blocks per game. At 13.1 percent, Anei ranks fifth nationally in block percentage, which is the percentage of opponents' two-point shots that are blocked by the player while he is on the court. Anei becomes just the third player, and the first since 2008, to lead the Big 12 in blocks and not make the league's all-defensive team.
?The Series With TCU
This will be the 34th all-time meeting between Oklahoma State and TCU, but the first in a conference tournament setting. The Cowboys are 26-7 all-time against the Horned Frogs and 9-5 against TCU since they joined the league in 2013. The two squads split the two regular season meetings in 2019, with the home team winning both times. The meeting in Fort Worth on Feb. 6 was an absolute thriller. OSU's Thomas Dziagwa tied the game at 68-68 on a contested corner 3-pointer with 5.6 seconds remaining, but TCU's J.D. Miller drove the length of the court and hit a fade-away baseline jumper over Yor Anei for the game winner.
?Success Against The Frogs
Cowboys Thomas Dziagwa and Isaac Likekele found success against the Horned Frogs this season. Dziagwa, a junior, scored 23 points on 6-of-13 shooting from 3-point in the Stillwater meeting, and averaged 18.5 points on 10-of-18 (.556) shooting from deep in the two meetings. Likekele, a freshman, scored 17 points and 13 points in the two meetings, and combined to shoot 47.8 percent with 5.0 assists per matchup. In the Fort Worth meeting, Yor Anei posted 20 points on 7-of-7 shooting.
?Cowboys At The Big 12 Championship
The Cowboys finished the regular season at 5-13 in league play and will be the No. 9 seed in the 2019 Big 12 Championship. OSU will face No. 8 seed TCU in the opening round on Wednesday at 6 p.m. on ESPNU. The winner of that game will move on to face No. 1 Kansas State in the quarterfinals on Thursday. In the regular season, OSU and TCU split their two regular season meetings.
?24 Wins And Counting
OSU is 24-20 in its history at the Big 12 Championship, including back-to-back titles in 2004 and 2005. The 24 wins rank third behind only Kansas (44) and Texas (26), while the program's .545 win percentage trails only Kansas (.788). Oklahoma State is 2-3 when playing as the No. 9 seed. The Cowboys are 3-1 against the No. 8 seed in its history.
