Cowboys Sweep UCF in Final Non-Conference Match
March 30, 2018 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER—Oklahoma State's men's tennis team defeated No. 36 Central Florida, 4-0, on Friday at the Michael and Anne Greenwood Tennis Center.
The victory marked the 18th-ranked Cowboys ninth sweep of the season. OSU has swept at least nine matches in every year under coach Jay Udwadia since his first season in 2013.
"This was a great week for the team," Udwadia said. "Beating Fresno State and Central Florida. To win against UCF like we did, I think that's the main thing. We are definitely prime for the Big 12 season and we're excited for it. It was nice to see the team come together the week before we start conference play."
Jurence Mendoza and Luke Hammond started doubles play off strong as they dominated UCF's Alan Rubio and Enrique Paya, 6-1.
Mathieu Scaglia and Julian Cash secured the doubles point for the Cowboys as they rallied back from being down, 1-3 to defeat Gabriel DeCamps and Mikhail Sokolovskiy of UCF in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-0).
"The doubles point was a little tight," Udwadia said. "But we got things going and from there we just hung on and battled."
In ensuing singles action, Hammond was the first to strike as he defeated UCF's Eero Vasa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Hammond improves his record to 18-7 on the season and is three wins away from cracking the program's Big 12 era season singles wins list.
Shortly after, No. 111 Scaglia took down Alan Rubio of UCF, 6-4, 6-3. The Sophomore is now tied with a handful of Cowboys for the 8th spot on the program's Big 12 era season singles wins list with 22 wins.
Senior Tristan Meraut would clinch the match for the Cowboys as he rallied back from a 0-6 loss in the first set to defeat Gabriel DeCamps of UCF, 6-1, 6-4. The senior now posts a 9-9 record on the season.
"At the end of the day it's just point after point," Tristan Meraut said. "I just forgot about the first set. Losing 7-6 or 6-0, at the end of the day it's just losing a set and there's two more to go."
The Cowboys finish their non-conference play with a 18-4 record. The Cowboys open Big 12 play April 6 against Texas Tech at 5 p.m.
