Four Cowboys Win Titles at Bob Smith Open

HAYS, Kan. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team won titles at four weight classes Sunday afternoon at the Bob Smith Open in Gross Memorial Coliseum. Colton Denney and Travis Wittlake picked up their third tournament titles of the season at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively, and Anthony Montalvo and Jonce Blaylock picked up their second tournament titles this season at 184 and 157 pounds.
Cowboys Wyatt Sheets, Andrew Marsden and Cornelius Putnam collected third-place honors, and several Pokes finished fourth as well.
Denney, who also finished first at the OCU and Lindenwood Opens, had two pins on the day and won the first-place bout in an 8-7 decision over Aryus Jones of Fort Hays State. Wittlake, who also won the OCU and Lindenwood tournaments, notched a fall over Anthony Lombardo of Wyoming and defeated Barton Community College's Gage McBride, 6-1, to advance to the finals bout, where he won by injury default.
Blaylock claimed his second open title on the year at 157 pounds, earning two technical falls to start the day and finishing with a 5-3 decision over Fort Hays' Efe Osaghae. After claiming a Lindenwood title two weeks ago, Montalvo brought home a first-place finish at 184 pounds from Hays for the Cowboys. He collected bonus-point victories in each bout of the day, including a fall over Riley Jaramillo of Saint Mary in the finals.
In the 197-pound bracket it was an all-Cowboy third-place bout, with Marsden defeating Harris, 8-4. Putnam also earned third-place honors in the heavyweight bracket.
Collecting fourth-place finishes were Jacob Fontanez (125), Dusty Hone (149), Wyatt Sheets (157), Christian Bahl (174), Bear Hughes (184).
The Cowboys are back in action Dec. 9, when the Oklahoma Sooners come to Gallagher-Iba Arena for Bedlam. The match will be nationally televised on ESPNU at 12:30 p.m. CT.
