Stillwater, Okla.---- The Oklahoma State Cowboys found themselves in position to win midway through the second half in a 70-56 loss to West Virginia in Gallagher-Iba Arena on Saturday.
Both teams got off to a slow start after halftime, until West Virginia used a 9-0 run to take a 42-31 lead into the first media timeout with 15:21 left.
Oklahoma State responded well, though. A Mitchell Solomon dunk off a Joe Burton assist cut the deficit to seven, and his free throw to complete the three-point play made it 42-35 with 14:30 remaining.Burton's three a minute later to complete the 8-0 Oklahoma State run cut the West Virginia lead to 42-29.
West Virginia's press would prove to be too much down the stretch as the Mountaineers hung on the final minutes for the win.
The Cowboys continued their trend of fast starts in the first half. After West Virginia got on the board first, a 7-0 Oklahoma State run forced a Mountaineer timeout with 16:31 remaining until halftime.
West Virginia would recover, but Shine's second three of the half gave the Cowboys the lead once more at 10-9 with 14:36 left.
Oklahoma State's second major streak of the afternoon, this time an 8-0 run, gave it an 18-16 lead thanks to Shine's fourth three of the half with 7:35 remaining.
A Solomon three out of the media timeout following the Shine three gave Oklahoma State a five-point lead, and Burton's three a minute later gave the Cowboys their biggest lead of the evening at 24-16.
West Virginia responded to the 14-0 Oklahoma State run and eventually took a 33-29 lead into halftime.
Jaysean Paige led the way for West Virginia with 17 points.
Oklahoma State had impact performances from Shine and Burton. Shine finished with 12 points while Burton finished with a career-high 16.
