Iowa State Postgame Notes
February 29, 2016 | Cowboy Basketball
- Due to injuries and illness, the Cowboys played without the services of four regular starters; PG Jawun Evans (shoulder), G Phil Forte (elbow), G Jeffrey Carroll (illness) and F Leyton Hammonds (finger/ankle). Those four players combined for 120 career starts and 44.8 points per game this season.
- Neither team led by more than four points in the opening half, and the Cyclones went into the break ahead by just two points, 27-25. Jeff Newber-ry hit an 18-foot jumper at the halftime buzzer.
- Iowa State opened the second half on an 11-0 run, and the Cowboys struggled to recover. OSU didn't score its first point of the second half until the 14:56 mark, and hit just two field goals in the opening 10 minutes of the frame. Iowa State led by as much as 18 points.
- A Tyree Griffin bucket with 2:02 to play cut the ISU lead to 53-47 and capped off a 10-0 Cowboy run. It was as close as OSU would come.
- Chris Olivier made his first start for the Cowboys on Monday night at Iowa State, and posted eight points and six boards.
- Tyree Griffin tallied five assists and no turnovers on the night. The sophomore has 33 assists in his last six games.
- The Cowboys have now lost five straight games overall, and 12 straight Big 12 road games dating back to last season.
- The Cyclones have now won the last seven matchups against Oklahoma State, and own a 38-16 edge over the Cowboys in Ames. Overall, OSU leads the series 63-60.
- OSU is now 1-8 this season against teams ranked in the AP top 25.
- With its three conference wins, Oklahoma State can mathematically climb no higher than the No. 8 seed for the Big 12 Tournament, which begins March 9 in Kansas City. If the tournament started today, OSU would be the No. 9 seed and would face No. 8 Kansas State on Wednesday, March 9 at 6 p.m. on ESPNU.
- Jeff Newberry is the only player to start every game for OSU this season.
- OSU has made at least one three-pointer in 513 consecutive games dating back to Jan. 13, 2001.
