STILLWATER – Oklahoma State head coach Brad Underwood will see a familiar face on the opposing bench when he opens his Cowboy coaching career with an exhibition game against Pitt State on Tuesday night.
Pitt State head coach Kevin Muff and Underwood were roommates at Kansas State while playing for Jack Hartman from 1984-86, and the two remain close friends to this day.
In five seasons at Pitt State, Muff has a 92-80 record, including a 2014-15 season that included a 20-12 mark and a trip to the NCAA Division II Tournament. He was named the MIAA Coach of the Year that season.
Underwood has gotten off to arguably the most successful start to a coaching career in NCAA history. He led Stephen F. Austin to an 89-14 record, including a pair of NCAA Tournament wins, over the last three seasons. Those 89 wins are tied with Brad Stevens (Butler, '08-10) for the most by any head coach in his first three seasons.

• With the hiring of Brad Underwood, Oklahoma State re-established its ties to the coaching tree of Mr. Henry Iba. Underwood played under legendary Kansas State head coach Jack Hartman, who was a standout for Mr. Iba at OSU, which was known as Oklahoma A&M at the time. Iba coached college basketball's original dynasty, leading his Aggies to the 1945 and 1946 NCAA championships - the first back-to-back titles by any college basketball team. An innovator on the court, Iba introduced the motion offense and was known as the "Iron Duke of Defense". OSU's arena is named in part for Iba, and another Iba disciple, Eddie Sutton, has his name etched on the floor.
• The Cowboys return to full strength after a season of injury woes in 2015-16. The biggest of those injuries occurred to All-Big 12 shooting guard Phil Forte, III (elbow), who missed 29 games, and Big 12 Freshman of the Year Jawun Evans (shoulder), who missed the final 10 games. The 11 OSU players that saw at least 10 minutes per game last season combined to miss a total of 55 games due to injury.
• Jawun Evans took the Big 12 by storm last season, and was a staple in the league's 2016-17 preseason awards and national watch lists. He was one of 20 named to the Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award watch list, and was one of five on the the Preseason All-Big 12 First Team. He led all Big 12 freshmen in scoring (12.9 PPG), assists (4.9 apg), assist-to-turnover ratio (1.9 A/TO), field goal percentage (47.1), 3-point field goal percentage (47.5) and free throw percentage (83.3). In the six games prior to his injury, Evans averaged 19.5 points, 6.0 rebounds and 6.3 assists per game - all team highs. Cowboy fans will always remember Evans' 42-point performance in the Bedlam game against Oklahoma in Stillwater, which are the most points ever scored by any player in the rivalry.
• The Cowboys are 55-4 in exhibition play since the 1973-74 season, and are currently riding a 28-game win streak. The Cowboys are 19-0 since the NCAA rule change in 2005-06 that only allows exhibition play against other college teams.
• Despite the injury that forced him to miss all but three games in 2015-16, Phil Forte, III is within striking distance of some pretty lofty OSU records - including the career 3-point mark. The senior was a Third-Team All-Big 12 selection in 2014-15 after racking up 15.0 points per game, which ranked fourth in the Big 12. Known for his relentless work ethic, Forte is a 38.9 percent 3-point shooter for his career, and has 244 career makes to his credit - only 55 behind Keiton Page for the OSU record. A veteran of 1,307 career points, Forte will also make an assault on the OSU scoring record books.
• A pair of players that stepped into the spotlight last year are expected to play key roles for the Cowboys in 2016-17. Jeffrey Carroll, a 6-6 junior wing, connected on 33.3 percent of his 3-point attempts last year, which helped him double his scoring output to 8.2 points per game. Leyton Hammonds, a 6-8 senior small forward, expanded his inside-out game to quadruple his scoring to average. He poured in a solid 10.6 points per game and led OSU with 5.1 rebounds per game as a junior.
