STILLWATER, Okla. – The Oklahoma State softball team dropped the first of a three-game set with No. 5/6 Oklahoma on Wednesday, as the Cowgirls fell, 7-1, in front of a packed house at Cowgirl Stadium.
The Cowgirls (19-28, 3-10) trailed the Sooners, 1-0, for the first three innings, but surrendered four runs in the top of the fourth, giving the visiting side a commanding lead throughout the rest of the contest.
"We didn't play bad, but giving up a four-spot in the fourth didn't really help our chances," head coach Rich Wieligman said. "It's never easy trying to come back against a team like that, but I thought our pitchers did well against a tough offense."
Despite being tasked with facing one of the best statistical offenses in the country, OSU starter Brandi Needham kept the Sooners in check at the start, allowing only one run over the first three innings. After allowing one in the first, Needham fired back to pitch back-to-back scoreless frames and keep the Cowgirls within reaching distance.
However, Oklahoma broke the game open in the fourth, using six hits to pound out four runs and push their lead to 5-0. Whitney Ellis hit a two-run homer, and Shelby Pendley Georgia Casey produced run-scoring singles to help the Sooners extend their advantage.
In the bottom of the fourth, junior Tiffany Mikkelson revitalized the crowd with a solo shot to left-center that cut the Cowgirls' deficit to 5-1. The blast was Mikkelson's 12th of the season and ended a no-hit bid from OU starter Paige Parker.
Mikkelson's long ball would eventually serve as Oklahoma State's lone offensive highlight of the contest, as Parker went on to shut the Cowgirls out over the final two frames and seal the victory for the visiting Sooners.
Oklahoma State will return to action on Wednesday, April 29, as the Cowgirls host North Texas in a doubleheader at Cowgirl Stadium.Â
