STILLWATER, Okla. - Oklahoma State's women's basketball team won consecutive conference games for the first time since January of last season on Wednesday, knocking off Texas, 66-60, in front of 2,475 fans inside Gallagher-Iba Arena.
With the win, OSU moved to 15-8 overall and 5-7 in Big 12 play. Texas dipped to 15-8 and 4-8. The win also snapped the Cowgirls' three-game home losing streak and was their fourth in the last five tries against the Longhorns.
Texas raced out to a 10-2 lead to open the game before the Cowgirls answered with six-straight points. OSU pulled even at 16 apiece with nine minutes remaining before taking its first lead at 23-21 three minutes later.
After the Longhorns moved back in front with just under four minutes to go, the Cowgirls answered with an 8-0 run capped by a Liz Donohoe 3-pointer with five seconds left. However, UT's Brooke McCarty drilled a long trey of her own at the buzzer to cut the deficit to 34-30 at the break.
The Cowgirls would never trail in the second half, leading by as many as seven, but could never shake the Longhorns.
After Texas knotted the game at 44-44 with 12 minutes to go, the Cowgirls scored the game's next six points and took a 54-47 lead with 7:20 left on a jumper by Brittney Martin.
With three and a half minutes left, Donohoe knocked down a jumper to match OSU's largest lead of the night before McCarty made it a two-possession game with another 3-pointer.
Donohoe knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:32 to go before back-to-back buckets from Texas trimmed the margin to 62-60 with 13 ticks left before OSU's point guard duo of Roshunda Johnson and Roddricka Patton each knocked down a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Donohoe led the Cowgirls with 20 points, while Martin added 15 points and seven steals. LaShawn Jones scored 16 points as well.
Making her first career start, Patton dished out 10 assists against zero turnovers. McCarty led all scorers with 21 points, including a 5-of-9 effort from the 3-point line.
The Cowgirls will be back in action on Saturday when they host Iowa State at 7 p.m.
