STILLWATER, Okla. -
The No. 23 Oklahoma State men's tennis team completed its nonconference schedule on Sunday with a 4-2 victory over the SMU Mustangs at the Greenwood Tennis Center.
The Cowboys (20-3) held off the upset-minded Mustangs by winning their eighth-consecutive doubles point and earning singles wins at the Nos. 1, 3 and 4 spots. Sunday's win also helped Oklahoma State reach the 20-win mark for the first time since 2005, when the Cowboys finished with a 22-7 record and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
After taking down multiple ranked doubles duos in conference play last weekend, Jakob Sude and Arjun Kadhe tacked on another victory by taking down SMU's Nowicky/Slobodkins, 8-5. Shortly after, Chris Haworth and Brady Bohrnstedt completed an 8-6 triumph over Kazijevs/Russell, giving the Cowboys a 1-0 advantage. Sude/Kadhe improved their undefeated run to 8-0, while Haworth/Bohrnstedt pushed their doubles record to 8-2.
In singles play, the Mustangs struck first by splitting first sets with the Cowboys, 3-3, and tying the match with a 6-1, 6-3 straight set win from Arkidjas Slobodkins over Haworth at No. 6. However, Oklahoma State answered with straight set victories of its own on courts one and three. Sude snapped a three-match skid by overpowering Arturs Kazijevs, 6-2, 6-4, and Kadhe took down Mischa Nowicki, 6-4, 6-3, earning his 11th sweep of the season.
Alex Sanders provided an immediate response for the Mustangs by defeating Sebastian Sachs, 6-3, 6-4, but Lucas Gerch's 6-2, 6-4 success at No. 4 singles ended the SMU threat and clinched the match for the Cowboys. Gerch's win moved his undefeated singles record to 16-0, while also marking the freshman's sixth match-clinching win of 2014.
After finishing nonconference competition with an 18-2 mark, Oklahoma State will conclude its regular season with three Big 12 battles at home, beginning with next weekend's set against No. 28 Texas Tech and seventh-ranked Baylor. For more updates and information, follow @CowboyTennis on Twitter.
