Cowgirls Wrap Up First Day at Duke Invitational

The Oklahoma State women's tennis team finished the first day of competition at the Duke Invitational in Cary, N.C., on Friday with two singles wins, as well as a victory in doubles.
The Cowgirls started off the day in doubles competition, where both Oklahoma State doubles teams fell short in their first match of the tournament. Megan McCray and Karyn Guttormsen lost their first round match to the 21st-ranked doubles team of Florida's Sophie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock. Guttormsen and McCray would rebound, however, when they defeated Katherine Oudin and Ansley Speaks of Furman, 8-6, to advance to the final round of the Black doubles consolation bracket. In the White doubles bracket, Cowgirls Kanyapat Narattana and Carla Tur Mari took a tough, 8-2, loss in their first round match. The 47th-ranked Cowgirl tandem was knocked off again in their second match, falling to the 42nd-ranked duo of Ashley Dai and Tessa Lyons of North Carolina in a tiebreaker that would give Dai and Lyons the victory.
Cowgirls Kanyapat Narattana and Karyn Guttormsen both notched first round victories in their respective brackets, with both wins coming in tight, three-set matches. Guttormsen, competing in the Blue singles bracket, defeated Duke's Alyssa Smith, 6-7(1), 7-6(4), 6-3, while Narattana snatched the 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 win over Iris Verboven of Ole Miss in the White singles bracket.
Freshman Megan McCray took the first set in her match against Ratnika Batra of Texas, but fell to Batra, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. North Carolina's Hayley Carter defeated Cowgirl freshman Carla Tur Mari in the first round of play in the Black singles bracket, 6-1, 6-2.
The Cowgirls will return to action at the Duke Invitational on Saturday morning, with doubles competition set to begin at 10 a.m. CT.
