Cowgirls Split at Mary Nutter Classic

Palm Springs, Calif. -- The Oklahoma State softball team opened up play at the 2013 Mary Nutter Classic Thursday afternoon, falling to fifth-ranked Florida 2-0 before defeating BYU 3-2 in the nightcap.
In game one, the game was scoreless until the bottom of the sixth inning when Florida plated two runs to take a 2-0 lead. The Gators would win the game by that score. Starting pitcher Kat Espinosa threw five innings, allowing no runs on three hits with seven strikeouts. Reliever Simone Freeman pitched an inning, allowing two runs on two hits.
In the win over BYU, Tarah Ettinger got the offense started in the bottom of the first inning when she hit a home run over the leftfield wall to give the Cowgirls a 1-0 lead.
BYU tied the game in the top of the fourth, but the Cowgirls regained the lead in the bottom of the frame when Samantha Chrisman scored on a fielder's choice by Tiffany Mikkelson, giving OSU a 2-1 lead. The Cowgirls added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth when a single by Amy Graham scored Chrisman from third to take a 3-1 lead.
The Cowgirls needed that run, as the Cougars scored one run in the top of the seventh inning, but OSU prevailed, 3-2.
Freeman started and pitched four innings, allowing just one run on three hits, striking out five. Espinosa threw four innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out four.
The Cowgirls (6-5) return to action Friday night when they take on No. 17 Stanford at 10:30 p.m. CT.
