Stillwater, Okla. -- Chelsea Garcia hit a game-tying double in the bottom of the seventh, then scored the winning run on a fly out by Tamara Brown as Oklahoma State's 23rd-ranked softball team defeated Kansas 4-3 here Sunday afternoon. The Cowgirls took the two-game set from the Jayhawks and moved to 3-3 in Big 12 Conference action.
Oklahoma State took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning as the Cowgirls scored a pair of unearned runs off Kansas starter Allie Clark. Garcia reached on an error and went to third on a base hit up the middle by Brown. A groundout by Ashley Boyd scored Garcia, and two outs later, Brown scored on a double by Amy Graham. Mariah Gearhart hit what would have been an infield single to the shortstop, but Graham elected to move to third and was thrown out to end the inning.
The Jayhawks tied the game in the top of the fifth. Maggie Hull led off the frame with a walk, and for the third time in the game and fifth-consecutive plate appearance, Brittany Hile was hit by a pitch. Two outs later, Laura Vickers walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter Kelsey Alsdorf hit a single up the middle, scoring two and tying the contest.
Kansas took a 3-2 lead in the top of the sixth on three-straight hits off reliever Kat Espinosa. With two outs, Hull and Hile both singled and Hull scored on a double by cleanup hitter Liz Kocon.
Oklahoma State stranded two runners in the sixth and trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the seventh. Alysia Hamilton led off the inning with a single to right, her second hit of the game. After cleanup hitter Julie Ward bunted Hamilton to second, she scored on the double by Garcia which hit the wall in right field. In the following at-bat, Brown hit a fly ball to the gap in right center. Kocon made a nice play to catch the ball, but fell sliding for the ball. Garcia moved to third on the catch, paused, then headed for home. She slid under the tag as the ball dribbled away from catcher Hile.
Senior Sarah Odom came on with one out in the seventh and improved to 2-0 this season after Ward took a line drive off the bat of Marissa Ingle and tagged first for the third out.
Oklahoma State (32-9 overall, 3-3 Big 12) will travel to Norman, Okla., this Wednesday for a game with the Oklahoma Sooners. First pitch is slated for 7 pm.
