Cowboys Fall in First Home Match

STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team moved to 3-6 on the year Tuesday, falling to 59th-ranked SMU, 6-1, at the DeBois Tennis Complex.

“We have no excuses,” coach James Wadley said. “We just got beat. This is our first home match and our third outdoors. We hope to get better.”

The Mustangs claimed the first point of day after earning wins at Nos. 3 and 1 doubles in the first matches completed. The Cowboys' 13th-ranked No. 1 tandem of Aleksey Bessonov and Rifat Biktyakov, competing together for the first time in more than a month, played SMU's Artem Baradach and Gaston Cuadranti to a close finish, but fell 8-6.

OSU's Maniel Bains and Eric West earned a doubles win for the Cowboys in the last match as they knocked off Tobias Flood and Joseph Hattrup, 8-6.

Although Cowboy Vlad Bondarenko earned a quick win in the first singles match finished as SMU's David Costa was forced to retire with an injury at No. 2 singles, it would not be enough as the Mustangs responded by winning the remaining five singles matches to seal the team win, 6-1.

“Now we've got two nationally-ranked teams coming in here so our guys have got to grow up quick and learn from their mistakes and jump back into the fire and see how we can do against Texas and Texas A&M.”

The Cowboys take on the No. 6 Aggies Friday at 2 p.m. and the No. 4 Longhorns Sunday afternoon after the completion of the Cowgirls matchup with Texas Tech. All home Cowboy and Cowgirl tennis matches are played at the DeBois Tennis Complex and admission is free.
