TEMPE, Ariz. -- The 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State softball team split its first two games of the season as it defeated Cal Poly 10-2 and lost to No. 14 Arizona State 1-0 on Friday here in Tempe. The Cowgirl pitching staff combined for only one earned run in the two games.
In the first game of the day, OSU run-ruled Cal Poly (0-2) in six innings by a score of 10-2. Junior Julie Ward hit a grand slam in the first inning to give the Cowgirls an early 4-0 lead. Ward hit a single to right field the next inning to score Ari Morrison from third base and finished the game with five runs batted in.
Sophomore Amy Graham hit a two-run shot over the left field fence in the third inning bringing the score to 7-0. Later in the inning, Morrison added another run when she hit a single to right field scoring Mariah Gearhart from second.
Sophomore Kat Espinosa started in the circle for the Cowgirls and threw three scoreless innings. She allowed just one hit while striking out three and walking one. Freshman Morgan Hawkins took over in the fourth inning and threw the last three innings. She allowed four hits for two unearned runs, struck out two and walked three.
Oklahoma State scored another two runs in the sixth inning when Tamara Brown hit a double to left field to score Gearhart and Morrison making the score 8-1.
Cal Poly had managed to score a run in the fourth inning when Hawkins walked a batter with the bases loaded. The second run came in the sixth inning when Nicole Lund hit an RBI-double to right field. However it wouldn't be enough for the Mustangs and, with the run-rule in effect, the Cowgirls would win 10-2.
Freshman Ari Morrison finished 4-for-4 in the game with three runs scored and an RBI. Espinosa picked up her first win of the season.
The second game of the day was a pitcher's duel between two freshmen: Arizona State's Dallas Escobedo and Oklahoma State's Simone Freeman. Escobedo picked up her third win of the season as she threw seven scoreless innings, allowed only two hits and struck out 11. Freeman fell to 0-1 despite throwing a near-flawless game. She gave up just three hits for one earned run and struck out four.
The Sun Devils (3-0) scored their lone run off a solo home run by Krista Donnenwirth. The only other extra-base hit in the game was a double by Cowgirl senior Alysia Hamilton. Oklahoma State will resume play in day two of the Kajikawa Classic and will face Cal-State Fullerton at 3 p.m. CT and Northwestern at 8 p.m. CT.
