Cowgirl Softball Picks up Two Wins in Arizona

The 22nd-ranked Oklahoma State softball team picked up two wins against Cal State-Fullerton (1-3) and Northwestern (2-2) on the second day of the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe. The Cowgirls (3-1) run-ruled the Titans 12-1 in the first game and defeated the Wildcats 5-4 in a 10-inning second game.
Three Cowgirls hit home runs against Cal-State Fullerton, including a grand slam from Sammy Jo Diffendaffer, the first of her career. Freshman Tarah Ettinger also hit the first home run of her career which came in her first career at-bat. Julie Ward went 2-for-3 with a solo home run and a double to centerfield. She finished the game with three runs batted in.
Freshman Simone Freeman got the start for Oklahoma State and improved to 1-1 on the season. She threw three innings, allowed two hits for one run and struck out three. Fellow freshman Morgan Hawkins threw the final two innings and allowed just one hit and struck out one. Cal-State Fullerton's lone run came from a solo home run by Natalie DeLeese.
Cowgirl pitcher Kat Espinosa picked up her second win of the season after throwing 10 innings against Northwestern. The sophomore allowed just two runs in the first seven innings off a home run by Adrienne Monka. Espinosa finished the game with 11 strikeouts, five walks and six hits allowed for two earned runs.
OSU scored a run in the second inning against the Wildcats when Julie Ward hit a double and later scored on a single by Tamara Brown. In the fifth inning, Ari Morrison reached base on an error and scored off a double by Alysia Hamilton.
With the score tied at two, the game went into extra innings and the international tie breaker went into effect. In the top of the eighth, the NU runner advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a sacrifice fly to go up 3-2. In the bottom of the inning, the OSU runner, Kelsea Schultz, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a double by Tamara Brown.
In the ninth inning, the Wildcat runner scored on a Cowgirl error. In the bottom of the inning, the Cowgirl runner, Amy Graham, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a single up the middle from Mariah Gearhart.
But in the 10th inning Northwestern failed to score the runner on second. In the bottom of the inning Jessica Smith intentionally walked Julie Ward and walked Tamara Brown to load the bases for Chelsea Garcia. The junior hit a sacrifice fly to left field to score Hamilton from third to win the game for the Cowgirls.
Oklahoma State will face Utah on Sunday at 1:15 p.m. CT in the final game of the Kajikawa Classic.
