WILMINGTON, N.C. - Oklahoma State's women's golf team opened play at the NCAA Championship on Tuesday with a 295 score to stand in 11th place at the Country Club of Landfall.
"It is a good start to the week," Cowgirl head coach Annie Young said. "Looking at the scorecards, we gave a few shots away on the back nine, but we are off to a fine start. It is a long week with a lot of golf left to be played."
The Cowgirls' 7-over score was a shot behind Virginia and just six strokes out of sixth place at the par-72, 6,368-yard layout. Southern California was one of two teams to break par during Round One, finishing at 6-under 282. Purdue came in at 284, while a trio of teams were all at even-par 288.
Individually, three players found themselves tied for first after firing 67s. Arizona State's Jennifer Johnson, Purdue's Maude-Aimee LeBlanc and USC's Jennifer Song all finished the day 5-under par.
National player-of-the-year candidate Caroline Hedwall led the charge for the Cowgirls, firing a 2-under 70 to stand in a tie for eighth place. The sophomore lit up the front nine with a 3-under 33 that included four birdies. After a bogey at No. 3, Hedwall reeled off birdies at Nos. 4, 5, 7 and 9.
The Loddekopinge, Sweden native ran into trouble with back-to-back bogeys at Nos. 10 and 11. However, Hedwall settled down with six-straight pars before closing with a birdie at the par-5 18th hole.
Freshman Hillary Wood was solid in her first-ever NCAA round, posting a 2-over 74 to stand in a tie for 49th place. Wood made two birdies on her front side and turned at 1-over 37 before putting together a back nine of eight pars and one bogey.
One stroke behind Wood was freshman Victoria Park. Park's 75 tied her for 64th place, while freshman Courtney McKim posted a 76 and is tied for 72nd place. Freshman Eyglo Oskarsdottir posted an 83 to stand in a tie for 122nd place.
The Cowgirls will begin their second round tomorrow at 12:20 p.m. (EST) and will once again be grouped with Vanderbilt and Virginia. Live scoring for the event is available at golfstat.com.
