OWINGS MILLS, Md. -
Oklahoma State's women's golf team carded a 303 during the first round at the NCAA Championship on Tuesday at Caves Valley Golf Club to finish the day tied for seventh place.
The Cowgirls' 15-over total knotted them with Wake Forest for seventh and put them a stroke behind top-ranked Arizona State and LSU for fifth place. Denver posted a 294 during Day One to come in two strokes ahead of UCLA.
North Carolina finished the day alone in third at 299, while Southern California held down the No. 4 spot at 301.
North Carolina's Catherine O'Donnell and Denver's Stephanie Sherlock were the only two players among the 126 competing to break par at the par-72, 6,443-yard layout. Both players finished at 2-under 70 on the day and two shots ahead of five players.
Senior Pernilla Lindberg paced OSU with a 74 and is tied for 12th place. Starting on the back nine, the Bollnäs, Sweden native birdied two of her first five holes to make the turn at 1-under. Lindberg made par on each of her first five holes coming in before finishing with three bogeys over her final four holes to wind up 2-over for the day.
Fellow senior Amanda Johnson carded four birdies during her first round on her way to a 76. The Tulsa, Okla., native finished tied for 38th place in a group that included teammate Caroline Hedwall.
Hedwall, who won the Duramed Fall Preview at Caves Valley last fall, overcame a slow start that included four bogeys in her first seven holes. The freshman posted birdies on two of her next three holes and closed her round with five consecutive pars.
Finishing a stroke behind Johnson and Hedwall was freshman Caroline Masson, who posted a 77 and finished tied for 50th place.
Senior Karin Kinnerud's opening 78 put her in a tie for 60th place.
The Cowgirls will begin their second round tomorrow at 8:50 a.m. (EST) and will be grouped with Virginia and TCU.
