TAMPA, Fla. -- Oklahoma State pitchers Lauren Bay and Tiffany Paper each threw a complete-game shutout, giving the Cowgirls two wins here Thursday night in pool play at the Speedline Invitational.
Bay, a sophomore southpaw, threw a no-hitter, striking out 14 while walking just three in a 3-0 win over Florida International. In fact, the Trail, British Columbia, native took part in every out entering the seventh inning.
OSU scored all three runs in the fourth inning, two on a home run by sophomore Ryan Realmuto. With Amanda Hayes reaching on a base hit with one out, Realmuto took a Heather Preston pitch over the fence. Bay followed that with a single of her own, and later scored on an error by the third baseman.
In the second game, Paper, a freshman from Copan, Okla., threw a two-hit shutout while striking out 11 batters in a 1-0 win over Illinois-Chicago. Oklahoma State scored its only run in the top of the first when Jenny Kipp scored on an RBI single by Bay.
Oklahoma State will play Florida A&M and Central Michigan on Friday afternoon before wrapping up pool play on Saturday morning. Bracket play will begin Saturday afternoon.
