Tampa, Fla. - Oklahoma State's softball team dropped two games Saturday, eliminating the Cowgirls from the Speedline Invitational here this weekend. OSU fell to Maryland, 3-1, in the final game of pool play before dropping a 5-3 decision to the Utah Utes in the first round of bracket play.
Against Maryland, the Cowgirls were able to get on base, but failed to score as they had seven runners left on base in the game. Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Cowgirl freshman Jade Lindly scored on a base hit by Angela Veronesi to tie the game at one run a piece.
However, Maryland responded as the Terrapins' Beth Radford hit a two-run homer off Cowgirl hurler Sarah Knife Chief to score the go ahead runs in the top of the sixth for the 3-1 score.
In the first round of bracket play, Oklahoma State faced Utah, a team the Cowgirls had beaten, 9-8, just a week ago in the Red Desert Classic. It was the Utes, however, that emerged victorious in this game, 5-3.
OSU took an early 2-0 lead in the first when Jenny Kipp scored on a sacrifice fly by Ryan Realmuto. On the play, Amanda Hayes advanced to third, and scored on an error by the third baseman.
Utah scored one in the third and added three in the fifth before taking a 5-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh. Lezli Leathers led off with a hit by pitch, followed by a Danielle Thomas single. Kipp had a base wrap to left field, but Leathers was thrown out at home.
Thomas scored on a double by senior Amanda Hayes, and Realmuto walked to load the bases. Pitcher Lauren Bay reached on a fielder's choice, and Stephanie Hodges grounded out to end the game.
Oklahoma State wil host the Oklahoma City Chiefs on Thursday, March 15, at 3 p.m. at Cowgirl Stadium in Stillwater.
