Cowgirl Golfers Win Big 12 Invitational

Stillwater, Okla. - Oklahoma State's Women's Golf team shot a final-round 316, but strong winds played a big role in the high scores as the Cowgirls won the Big 12 Invitational by 15 strokes here Wednesday afternoon. OSU shot a three-day total of 908, outscoring second-place Ohio State, which shot a 923.
The gusting winds sent scores flying. The average score on Monday's two rounds was just over 80. On Tuesday, that averaged jumped to 83.28.
Tulsa's Stacy Prammanasudh, an Enid, Okla., native, shot a two-under 70 on Tuesday and a three-under 213 for the tournament to take individual medalist honors. Cowgirl junior Christi Cano shot a 223 for the tournament and finished second, one stroke ahead of Iowa State's Laura Wells. Nicole Melton of Texas A&M shot a 225 for fourth, while Cowgirl Linda Wessberg and Ohio State's Ashley Lowery tied for fifth at 227.
Oklahoma State had a four-stroke lead over Ohio State entering the final round, and the Buckeyes could never get on track, shooting a team score of 327. Northwestern was 12 strokes back on Monday, and shot a 323 on the final day to finish third, 19 strokes behind Oklahoma State. Tulsa shot 929 for the tournament, and TCU shot a 938, rounding out the top-five teams.
Oklahoma State senior Emma Zackrisson tied for seventh in the final standings with a three-round total of 228. Freshman Annie Thurman shot a 230, good enough for 14th place and giving the Cowgirls four golfers in the top 15. Freshman Jenny Karr shot a 249 and tied for 48th place.
"This is a tournament we felt we had to win, because it was at Karsten Creek," said Oklahoma State head coach Amy Weeks. "Monday was the most perfect day at Karsten Creek all year."
"I knew that if we could get a lead (on Monday), then we would be able to keep it, because we would have a tremendous advantage under normal conditions out there. The weather today is what's normal at Karsten Creek."
The Cowgirls will return to action on Nov. 9, as they compete in the Golfworld/Palmetto Dunes Invitational in Hilton Head, S.C.
