Cowgirl Golfers Finish 13th At NCAA Championships

Auburn, Wash. - Oklahoma State shot the fourth-best round of the day, carding a team total of 290, as the Cowgirl golfers moved up two spots to finish the 2002 NCAA Championships in 13th place here Friday afternoon. Cowgirl junior Linda Wessberg rebounded from yesterday's score of 84 with a one-under-par 71.
Duke won the team title with a 12-over 1164, six strokes better than a trio of teams that tied for second. Arizona, Auburn and Texas all tied with a 1170. Georgia, the defending national champion, rounded out the top-five teams with an 1176.
Virada Nirapathpongporn led the Duke Blue Devils by winning the individual medalist honors. Her four-day score of 279 was nine under par, outscoring a group of four golfers that each scored a 284. Nirapathpongporn is a sophomore from Bangkok, Thailand. In fact, three of the top-five finishers are international students.
Oklahoma State was two under as a team on the back nine and had no scores higher than bogey on the day. The Cowgirls were nine-over-par on the four par threes, including 10 bogeys and just one birdie. The most difficult hole was No. 5, on which OSU had four bogeys. Oklahoma State was two-under-par on the par fives, with four birdies and two bogeys, both on hole No. 17.
The 1189 total was the lowest 72-hole score by a Cowgirl team in school history.
Junior Christi Cano shot a 72 and finished with a four-day total of 295, the fifth-best NCAA Championship by a Cowgirl in school history. Senior Emma Zackrisson carded an even-par 72 on Friday as well, and finished with a four-round total of 296, the sixth-best NCAA Championship by a Cowgirl.
Freshmen Jenny Karr and Annie Thurman both shot a final round of 75, with Karr finishing in 60th place with a 301 while Thurman finished 75th with a 304 four-round total.
Oklahoma State returns four-of-five starters next season, losing Zackrisson. She ends her career with more rounds (144) and more strokes (10,973) than any other Cowgirl in school history. She also finishes with the third-best career stroke average (76.20) by any golfer in a Cowgirl uniform.
