He took the South African high schol crown in the 800 in 2014, and in the same year took third at the Zone IV African Youth Games in Zimbabwe, and third in the Southern African Track and Field Championships in the same event... He was named his team captain in 2014 and led his team to an inter-high victory...He held the position of prefect in 2013 and 2014… Off the track van Niekerk played field hockey.
Personal: Son of Jacques and Barbara van Niekerk… Born on March 18, 1996… Father was a provincial middle distance runner and his mother was a swimmer.
