STILLWATER – After winning on Thursday and Friday, the No. 23/21 Oklahoma State softball team fell short of a series sweep of BYU, falling 7-3 on Saturday afternoon at Cowgirl Stadium.

With the loss, the Cowgirls dropped to 21-10 overall and 4-5 in Big 12 play, while BYU improved to 9-20 and 1-5 in conference.

BYU set the tone with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning by Lily Owens.

The Cowgirls responded in the bottom of the first when Claire Timm stole home as part of a first-and-third double steal with Amanda Hasler, who was also safe on the play. In the following inning, a BYU error allowed Jayelle Austin to score and tie the game at two.

The Cougars scored the next five runs to take a 7-2 lead before a late push by Oklahoma State in the bottom of the sixth inning produced one run.

OSU positioned itself to score late but stranded two runners in the fifth inning and left the bases loaded in the sixth. The Cowgirls left nine runners on base in the game.

RyLee Crandall (6-3) relieved Preslee Downing in the top of the third inning and pitched one inning, taking her third loss of the season. Ruby Meylan closed out the game for OSU.

BYU starter Jada Villegas (1-7) threw a complete game to earn her first win of the season.

The Cowgirls returned to action at 5 p.m. CT on March 25 at Tulsa.
