Cowboy Tennis Opens Doubleheader with Sweep of UTSA

STILLWATERÂ -Â Oklahoma State's men tennis team returned to the win column with a 7-0 victory over UTSA on Friday afternoon at the Greenwood Tennis Center.Â
Oklahoma State improved to 4-2 on the season with the win, including a 4-0 mark at the Greenwood Tennis Center. The win also improves the Pokes record over the Roadrunners to 4-0 all-time.Â
"It was nice," junior Derek Pham said. "This was my first match this season and it's always nice to be playing in the Greenwood. Happy about the win today, we swept them 7-0, and that's always a good start to the day."
Starting with doubles play and playing in their first match together, OSU senior Alessio Basile and sophomore Ian Bracks swiftly closed out their match over UTSA's Maximilian Ontiveros and Yonatan Sagiv on court three, 6-3.Â
Following a UTSA win on court one, OSU senior Aaron Williams and junior Nicolas Kobelt needed the win for the doubles point. They locked in and took down UTSA's Enzo Vargas and Timeo Bretin, 6-4, securing the doubles point. The pairing is now 5-1 on the campaign.Â
Heading into singles play, court five wrapped up quickly, with Kobelt bouncing back from his loss at Princeton, taking down UTSA's Constantin Radu, 6-1, 6-3. Moving down to court four, Williams continued his dominant start in the black and orange, improving to 6-0 on the season, defeating Ben Chetewy Ungar, 6-1, 6-1.
Basile clinched the match by defeating Grzegorzewski, 6-3, 6-1.Â
The last three matches ended in tiebreakers, where the Cowboys clinched all three.Â
Freshman Charlie Valentine took down Sagiv, 6-1, 7-6(4), securing his third-straight win to start his Cowboy career, with all three wins coming in straight sets. Following the win on court six, Pham took a victory over Vargas, 6-0, 7-6(4), on court two. The win was the first of the season for the Australian.Â
With the match well in hand, Bracks battled back from a tough first set to secure the sweep for the Cowboys, 3-6, 6-3, 10-6.
The Cowboys will return at 6 p.m. for the second match of today's doubleheader, this time against Creighton.
