TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team sent six wrestlers into the finals of the 2025 Big 12 Wrestling Championships Saturday and wrapped up the opening day of the event in first place in the team standings.
The Cowboys have 137.5 team points with two sessions remaining and lead second-place Northern Iowa by 17 points.
OSU's finalists include Troy Spratley (125 pounds), Tagen Jamison (141), Dean Hamiti Jr. (174), Dustin Plott (184), Luke Surber (197) and Wyatt Hendrickson (heavyweight). UNI has four finalists and no other team has more than two.
"I thought we did a pretty good job," coach David Taylor said. "A couple (matches) we didn't win there, but we've got to battle back… (The mindset) doesn't change. We've got to keep scoring. It just puts us in the best situation individually to go win some matches. It separates us from the competition both individually and as a team."
Jamison delivered one of the biggest upsets of the season to claim his spot in the finals, defeating previously undefeated Andrew Alirez of Northern Colorado, 13-6, in sudden victory. Alirez was on a 42-match winning streak that included an undefeated NCAA championship season in 2023, a redshirt in 2024 and a 14-0 record in 2025 entering the match.
Trailing 4-2 with just over a minute remaining in the third period, Jamison secured a takedown to go up, 5-4. After a reversal then an escape with six seconds remaining, the match went to sudden victory. Midway through the extra time, Jamison scored his second takedown on Alirez and added four back points to finish the upset, reaching the first conference final of his career. Jamison's two takedowns on Alirez are even more impressive considering Alirez had allowed just two takedowns all season entering the match.
"Tagen's a tough kid," Taylor said. "Really committed. He's been right there knocking on the door and that was a good one for him. He was in at the end of the first and was in on another one, but didn't quite get it. Then, he got a takedown and got himself in it. Those are the kind of matches you've got to win to be a national champ."
The other five Cowboy finalists were favorites in their bouts but still recorded solid wins to advance.
Hendrickson was the most dominant, pinning Oklahoma's Juan Mora in 3:22 to record his third fall of the day in as many matches. It marks his fourth consecutive Big 12 finals appearance, and he will try for his third title after winning the 2022 and 2023 heavyweight titles at Air Force.
Hamiti also won his semifinal bout with bonus points, knocking off 2024 Big 12 champion Cade DeVos of South Dakota State with a 17-8 major decision. It marks the third straight year for Hamiti to reach a conference final, as he was a Big Ten champion in 2023 and Big Ten runner up in 2024.
Now a four-time Big 12 finalist, Plott advanced with a 7-3 decision over third-seeded Bennett Berge of South Dakota State. He will try for his third Big 12 title after winning at 174 pounds in 2022 and 2023.
Spratley and Surber both make their second career appearance in the Big 12 finals, with Spratley finishing runner up as a freshman last season and Surber finishing as the heavyweight runner up in 2022. Spratley made it this year with a 2-0 semifinal win over North Dakota State's Tristan Daugherty, while Surber got past South Dakota State's Zach Glazier with a 1-0 semifinal win.
OSU 149-pounder Teague Travis and 157-pounder Caleb Fish nearly gave the Cowboys two more finalists, but each lost hard-fought decisions in the semifinals.
They will wrestle in Sunday morning's consolation semifinals and can still finish as high as third place. They will be joined in the consolation semifinals by 165-pounder Cameron Amine, who used a technical fall and major decision in the consolation bracket to reach the round.
After Saturday's results, eight Cowboy wrestlers have secured their place at the 2025 NCAA Championships, and Teague Travis can make it nine with a win in his first match Sunday. Reece Witcraft will have to earn an at-large bid to reach the tournament, and Travis would be in the same position with a consolation semifinal loss Sunday.
The Cowboys compete Sunday at noon CT in the third session of the 2025 Big 12 Wrestling Championships. Fans can watch the action live on ESPN+, see live results on TrackWrestling.com and follow updates via @CowboyWrestling on X. The finals will begin at 8 p.m. CT and will be televised by ESPNU.
