March 08, 2025 | Cowboy Wrestling
TULSA, Okla. – The Oklahoma State wrestling team wrapped up the first session of the 2025 Big 12 Wrestling Championships in first place Saturday morning, advancing eight wrestlers to Saturday night's semifinal round and two to Saturday night's consolation rounds.
The Cowboys, who finished with a 15-2 overall record in the opening session, have 83 team points to outpace second-place Iowa State's 54, and their eight semifinalists are three more than any other team.
OSU claimed 12 of its wins with bonus points, highlighted by a pair of first period falls from both heavyweight Wyatt Hendrickson and 184-pounder Dustin Plott.
"It's good," coach David Taylor said of recording wins with bonus points. "We talked about that at this tournament, bonus points are a difference-maker. We did a good job of doing that this morning. It's good to see that."
Tagen Jamison, Dean Hamiti Jr. and Luke Surber also produced a pair of bonus point wins each, as Jamison recorded a major decision and tech fall at 141 pounds, Hamiti won via fall and technical fall at 174 pounds and Surber claimed a technical fall and major decision at 197 pounds.
In addition to that group, Oklahoma State also sent wrestlers into the semifinals at 125 pounds, 149 pounds and 157 pounds in Troy Spratley, Teague Travis and Caleb Fish, respectively. Reece Witcraft (133 pounds) and Cameron Amine (165 pounds) are in the consolation bracket.
Some notable wins included Spratley's quarterfinal major decision over fifth-seeded Tanner Jordan of South Dakota State to avenge his loss to Jordan in the blood round of the 2024 NCAA Championships, and a quarterfinal win from Travis over Oklahoma's third-seeded Willie McDougald after nearly four months away from the mat.
Except for the unseeded Travis going 2-0, each of OSU's wins in the first session came from wrestler seeded higher than their opponent.
All 10 Cowboys compete Saturday night in the second session of the 2025 Big 12 Wrestling Championships, with the first bout set for 5 p.m. CT. Fans can watch the action live on ESPN+, see live results on TrackWrestling.com and follow updates via @CowboyWrestling on X.
