Cowboy Distance Medley Relay records second-fastest time in NCAA history in regular season finale at Arkansas Qualifier
February 21, 2025 | Cowboy Cross Country & Track
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Oklahoma State Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field wrapped up their regular seasons Friday at the Tyson Track Center in Fayetteville, Ark., at the Arkansas Qualifier.
The Cowboys wasted no time making their presence known, turning in an incredible performance in the first running event of the day: the Distance Medley Relay. The relay team of Brian Musau, Jordon Smith, Mehdi Yanouri, and Ryan Schoppe combined for an electric time of 9:16.24, the second-best time in NCAA Indoor Track and Field history and third-best time in world history.
Additionally, it is the fastest in school history, breaking the previous Oklahoma State record of 9:16.40 set at the 2023 Arkansas Qualifier that now stands third all-time in NCAA History. Brian Musau contributed a time of 2:50.94 in the opening 1,200-Meter leg, Jordon Smith ran a time of 46.83 in the 400 Meters, Mehdi Yanouri posted a time of 1:46.05 in the 800 Meters, and Ryan Schoppe turned in a time of 3:52.43 in the final 1,600-Meter leg.
"I was really happy with the DMR," Director of Track & Field and Cross Country Dave Smith said. "The guys came here with a job to do and they got it done. A national qualifier, school record… Ryan Schoppe once again proved why he has been our anchor for four straight years."
Laban Kipkemboi continued the impressive performances Friday night in the men's Mile, posting a 3:53.29 mark, which set a new Arkansas Qualifier meet record. Kipkemboi, who already held the second-best mile time in school history at 3:54.73, improved his personal best by over a second and retains his place in the program record books.
Kipkemboi's mark will also likely secure him a spot at the NCAA Championships in the Mile as he currently sits 12th overall, with the top 16 marks qualifying. In the same race, Alex Stitt also put together a notable performance in the event, finishing third with a time of 3:54.20, good for third-best in school history. Stitt becomes just the fourth Cowboy ever to run a sub 3:55.00 mile.
"Laban and Alex were very good in the mile," Smith said. "Both of them ran well-executed, tough races. Laban should be safely into the NCAA Championships, giving us a bit more firepower as we chase a top-10 finish as a team."
On the women's side, Jinah Mickens-Malik clocked a time of 54.55 in the 400 Meters, good for fifth-best in program history. Katie Chapman's time of 8.66 in the 60 Meter Hurdles tied her for third in program history. Kaylie Politza placed fourth overall in the 800 Meters with a time of 2:03.95, just shy of her 2:03.47 personal best run earlier this season.'
"The women's middle-distance runners were also very good today," Smith said. "Jinah Mickens-Malik, Kaylie Politza, Madi Surber, Lilly Lavier and Mandeep Sangha are really coming around and running the best track times of their lives at just the right time as we head into the postseason."
Over in the field, Zac Robbins established a new personal best in the men's Weight Throw with a 19.18 Meter toss, good for second place in the event and third-best in program history. Kade Benjamin's 2.06 Meter clearance in the men's High Jump is tied for the seventh-best in the school record books and earned him third place in the event. Kileigh Mixon took home a second place finish in the women's High Jump.
Both the Cowboys and Cowgirls return to the track next weekend with postseason action at the Big 12 Indoor Championships in Lubbock, Texas, from Feb. 28-March 1.
