March 19, 2024 | Cowboy Tennis
STILLWATER – The Oklahoma State men's tennis team ranked 25th, while three singles players and a doubles pairing appeared in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association's rankings, announced today.
Tyler Zink notched a No. 18 national ranking, while Isaac Becroft emerged at No. 70 and Alex Garcia at No. 77. The pairing of Zink and Becroft ranked 35th nationally.
The team ranking marks the third time OSU appeared in the top-25 this season. The Cowboys are coming off wins over No. 68 Tulsa and No. 11 Illinois. Oklahoma State is 9-2 in its last eleven matches, outscoring opponents 54-16 during that stretch. The win over 11th-ranked Illinois marked the second top-15 win in 2024, defeating No. 5 USC on Feb. 10.
Zink returned to No. 18, tied for his second-best ITA ranking of the season. He won his last three matches, two of which were against ranked opponents. The graduate dropped San Diego's No. 5 Oliver Tarvet, 7-6(4), 6-1, before cruising past Illinois' No. 38 Hunter Heck in straight sets. Zink is 4-2 against ranked opponents and boasts a 12-4 overall record, with all matches played on court one.
Becroft appeared in the singles rankings for the first time this season. The New Zealand native posted a 13-0 record, leading the Cowboys in wins. It marks the best start to a season since Lucas Gerch in 2014. Eight of his wins came on court three and five victories on court two. He dropped two ranked opponents this season, including a win over Illinois' highest ranked player, No. 30 Karlis Ozolins, to clinch the match for the Pokes.
Garcia's ranking marks the 14th-consecutive week in the singles rankings. The veteran is 9-4 in singles action, recording a team point over Tulsa's Timothy Carlsson Segar en route to an OSU victory.
The doubles pairing of Zink and Becroft checked in at No. 35, going 8-2 in the fall and securing four matches in a row to win the ITA Fall Regional in Stillwater.
OSU will look to improve upon its ranking as begins its conference slate against BYU on Thursday at 6 p.m. CT in Provo, Utah, before heading to Lubbock, Texas, to take on Texas Tech on Saturday at 2 p.m. CT.
